Utah Valley Defeats CSUN 5-1
9/2/2021 9:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer
An early attack from the Wolverines (2-0-1) resulted in an Aaron Nixon off-target attempt in the third minute. The Matadors turned away a UVU threat in the 11th minute when the Wolverines were awarded a free kick just outside the CSUN box. Alejandro Silva's ball was pushed aside by the CSUN defense, resulting in a goal kick.
On the ensuing Utah Valley possession, Silva's shot was saved by Cooper Wenzel out-of-bounds. Caleb Wright's corner kick was re-directed by Cooper Johnson past Wenzel to give UVU the 1-0 lead. It was another set piece that led to the Wolverines' second goal. Utah Valley was awarded a corner kick in the 22nd minute. Silva's corner kick found Johnson who sent the ball towards Aaron Nixon who successfully connected on a bicycle kick for a 2-0 advantage.
CSUN began to steady themselves in the final 15 minutes of the opening stanza. The Matadors mounted several different offensive attacks with the first official shot coming in the 40th minute when Jamar Ricketts' attempt was saved by Joseph Wheelwright. The Wolverines responded in the 44th minute when Nixon stole the ball away from a CSUN defender. He dribbled in and scored from just inside the 18-yard mark. Off the kick, the Matadors posted a rush that resulted in Maximillian Yanakaev taking a long blast that forced Wheelright to make a save.
Edson Palos got the Matadors on the board in the 50th minute. Wheelright tried to take possession of the ball in front of his net. Palos pressed, tooked the ball away, and scored from just inside the 18 to make it 3-1. Diego Castillo responded in the 55th minute when he took a Nixon cross and scored from 10 yards out. The Wolverines extended the lead in the 57th minute on a Kwizera Jojea tally as Nixon picked up his second assist on the match.
"We got run over in every phase of the game," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We must get more competitive."
The Wolverines outshot CSUN 16-7, 8-4 on goal. Utah Valley recorded nine corner kicks compared to two for the Matadors. A redshirt freshman, Wenzel made three saves in goal for CSUN in his first start. Wheelright also made three saves for UVU.
The Matadors (0-3) travel to UCLA Monday night. Kick is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on Pac12.com.
