CSUB Defeats CSUN 4-3 to Open Big West Men's Soccer Play
9/29/2021 10:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield defeated CSUN 4-3 in the Big West Men's Soccer opener for both clubs Wednesday night.
The Roadrunners jumped on the board 1:39 into the match when Rene Cortez took a long ball from Bryson Hankins. Cortez sent the ball from outside the 18-yard box and managed to get the ball to bounce off the right goal post for his first of the season.
CSUN responded a little under six minutes later when Michael Arrington's blast from 20+ yards out went into the top right corner of the CSUB goal and the outstretched arms of 'Runner keeper Scott Pengelly. Giovanni Aguilar put the Matadors up for the first time in the 11th minute. Aguilar took a CSUN throw in, dribbled twice, and shot from distance past Pengelly.
Eric Whelan tied the score in the 30th when he headed in a Niklas Roessler corner kick. Arturo Reveles gave the Matadors the lead at 53:00. Ethan Benham set up the goal when he dribbled in towards the CSUB net. His back pass to Reveles opened a lane from which Reveles score for the second time this season.
Michael Vogel tied the score at the 73:07 mark. Hesron Barry passed the ball to Vogel who took one dribble and found the bottom left of the CSUN goal. Aodan O'Hara posted the game winning goal 4:16 later. Vogel sent O'Hara on a run where Vogel took a shot from just inside the 18-yard mark. The ball bounced off a CSUN defender and into the Matador net.
The 'Runners protected the lead in the final 12+ minutes, allowing only shot for the remainder of the half, a Benham blast that went wide in the 82nd. CSUB would only take two shots in the second half. The Matador attempt at comeback was hampered when Aguilar was issued a red card with 1:48 remaining.
CSUN (1-9) outshot CSU Bakersfield (2-5-1) 21-6 for the game, 9-5 on goal. Freshman Jamar Ricketts led all players with seven shots. Pengelly made six saves. The Matadors held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
