Cal Poly Defeats CSUN 1-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Cal Poly defeated CSUN 1-0 in Big West Conference Men's Soccer action Sunday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs drew a CSUN foul a minute into the match which resulted in a free-kick just outside the 18-yard mark. Neil Boyal's effort was saved by David Preys. A little over six minutes later, Arturo Reveles stole a back pass from the Mustangs. His shot was on target but saved by Carlos Arce-Hurtado.
A Khalid Hunter attempt went off a Cal Poly defender in the 11th minute, earning the Matadors a corner kick. Oscar Cardenas' corner would end up going out of bounds, giving the Mustangs a goal kick. After CSUN was whistled for a foul, Cal Poly was awarded a free kick that was punched away by Preys as the Mustangs were called for offsides.
A Cal Poly shot was blocked in the 16th minute. The Matadors pushed into the Cal Poly offensive zone where Omar Grey's blast in the 18th minute. was saved in the bottom left of the net by Arce-Hurtado. Grey's second attempt just went wide left off a 3-on-2 rush in the 20th. Drew Patterson nearly put the Mustangs into the lead at the 21:56 mark when his long shot went off the right goal post and bounced out in front where the Matadors cleared the ball.
A Reveles shot was wide at 34:25. The Matadors were awarded a corner kick at 36:11. A short time later Maximillian Yanakaev had a shot blocked by the Cal Poly defense. CSUN's fourth corner kick of the half came in the 41st minute. Jamar Ricketts took a shot that went high and above the net. There was no score at halftime.
CSUN turned away three potential Cal Poly offensive threats in the first 15 minutes of the second half. The first Matador offensive opportunity of the second half came in the 63rd minute on a corner kick. The ball floated through to Arce-Hurtado in goal which he threw to a teammate upfront. A Grey attempt from the football goal line went wide right.
Cal Poly earned their first corner in the 68th minute. Neil Boyal sent the ball towards the box where Jacob Glass headed it in to break the seal. Two minutes later, a second Mustangs' corner nearly found the net, but Drew Patterson's header went over the top of the goal.
A CSUN free-kick at 73:38 found Marcos Delgado in front where his shot that was to the bottom left of the net was saved by Arce-Hurtado. A CSUN yellow card with a little over nine minutes to play resulted in a Cal Poly free kick. Logan Thralls was off target and to the right of the CSUN goal. A pair of Matadors' free kicks in the final five minutes would go long. The possession was returned to the Mustangs.
A deep CSUN pass with 40 seconds remaining was knocked around in front with Arce-Hurtado coming up with the ball. At 89:45, the Matadors were awarded a free kick after a Cal Poly foul. Preys moved from goal to the offensive end of the ball. The kick went towards the net and was knocked away by a Cal Poly defender as time ran out.
The Matadors (1-10, 0-2 Big West) outshot the Mustangs (3-4-2, 1-0-1 Big West) 10-6, 4-2 on goal. Arce-Hurtado made four saves. CSUN held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
"The effort was great," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "Set pieces are a huge part of the game. We emphasize set pieces in practice. (Jacob) Glass was on our pregame scouting report and he was the one who beat us with a set piece."

This was the seventh time in 11 CSUN matches this season that the score was decided by one goal…dating back to the Division II days for both clubs, this was the 60th all-time meeting between CSUN and Cal Poly…the 60 matches are the most that the Matadors have played against a single opponent since the program was started in 1978…CSUN leads the series 31-19-10.
