VALENCIA, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team held off a hard-charging California Baptist team on the final day to win its second straight Bill Cullum Invitational championship by a single stroke Tuesday afternoon at The Oaks Club at Valencia.
The Matadors (852) began the day with four-shot lead over second place UC Irvine and were six shots clear of third place Hawai'i. California Baptist (853) was 14 shots back to begin the final round before the Lancers shot a scorching 12-under 276 as team on Tuesday to finish second by a single shot. CSUN finished at 1-over 289 to repeat as Cullum champions and win its first event since the UCSB Intercollegiate last April.
CSUN senior Felix Schrott began the day one shot behind UCI's Rei Harashima before battling a trio of players over the final round to claim individual medalist honors. Schrott battled UC Irvine's Darien Zhao, UC Riverside's Josh Hu and UCLA's Ty Griggs over the final 18 holes, trading the lead with Zhao on a pair of occasions. Schrott was 2-under through 14 holes before a double bogey seven at No. 15 dropped him into second. But he was able to finish with three straight pars to wind up 54 holes even with Zhao at 6-under 210.
Schrott, who would defeat Zhao on the first playoff hole (par-bogey), posted his first individual win as a Matador and CSUN's first win since Blake Brothers captured the St. Mark's Intercollegiate in April, 2021.  Â

COACH JIM BRACKEN SAID
"Felix (Schrott) getting up-and-down for par on No. 18 and Nick (Fowlkes) and Eirik (Thomassen) playing their last three holes five-under par really saved us today. We played two good rounds on Monday but today really showed the character this team has. We made lots of mistakes over the first part of the day; basically poor execution, hitting the wrong side of greens and that kind of thing but it was nice to see us battle to the very end and pull out the win."
The Matadors will travel to Stockton next week to compete at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational which will be held at the Stockton Golf and Country Club (Oct. 20-22).
