CSUN Scores Twice in Second Half To Defeat CSUB 2-0

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSUN scored twice in the second half as the Matadors defeated CSU Bakersfield 2-0 in Big West men's soccer action Saturday night at the Main Soccer Field.
The Matadors threatened early. CSUN was whistled for offsides three times in the first seven minutes, the final time waiving off a Dylan Gonzalez goal. The Roadrunners took four of the next five shots with two attempts going off the Matador goalpost.
CSUB threatened with under two minutes to play in the first half. Stephen Marcano's blast from in front of the CSUN net was saved by Cooper Wenzel and resulted in a corner kick. The Matadors defended the set piece, but the 'Runners earned a second corner which was played into the CSUN box. The ball was kicked around as time expired in the frame.
David Diaz stole the ball from a CSU Bakersfield defender in the 48th minute. Diaz couldn't settle the ball firmly as his attempt went out to the top right of the Roadrunner goal. Three minutes later Carlos Armendariz's shot was high and left the Matadors' goal. CSUB maintained possession to earn a corner kick. The set piece resulted in an Armendariz attempt in front that was saved by Wenzel.
The teams traded shots in the 54th minute. Levin Gerhardt put the Matadors on top in the 59th minute. His blast from just inside the 18 got past CSUB goalie Fillppo Dadone on the low right side. Diaz was given the assist on the goal.
CSUB was awarded a free kick a foot outside of the box in the 66th minute. The free kick went off the wall and ended up on the foot of Rene Cortez. Cortez had a wide-open look, but went high with his attempt, keeping the score at 1-0. At 72:18 Armendariz's effort from just outside the 18 was saved by a diving Wenzel. A little over a minute later Atti Stefansson's long shot was saved by Wenzel.
The Matadors recorded three shots in 12 seconds in the 77th minute. Kanata Furutani's attempt was saved by Dadone in the lower right. The rebound came out to Gerhard who had the ball deflected to Idriss Oubrik. His shot went out wide, resulting in a goal kick for CSUB.
Furutani made it 2-0 with exactly nine minutes to play. A Diaz shot was saved by Dadone. The rebound came out to Furutani for his first goal of the season.
THE STATS
Both teams took 13 shots with the 'Runners taking five shots on goal. The Matadors posted four shots on goal. CSUB posted seven corner kicks, compared to one for CSUN. Wenzel made five saves for his fifth shutout of the year. He is now tied with four others for the fifth most shutouts in a season by a CSUN goalie at the Division I level. Dadone had two saves. CSUN was called for offsides eight times.
