CSUN Wins 3 Doubles Matches on Day 1 of ITA SW Regionals

SAN DIEGO—The CSUN women's tennis team opened play at the ITA Southwest Regionals Thursday. The tournament was played on the campus of the University of San Diego and the campus of San Diego State.
DOUBLES
Jolene Coetzee and Angela Ho defeated Larissa Teramura and Cydney Yamamoto of UC Irvine by an 8-0 count. Coetzee and Ho advanced to Friday's round of 32 where the Matador pair will face UCLA's Fangran Tian and Ava Catanzarite.
Victoria Santibañez Luna and Cindy Ung moved onto the 32's when they defeated Cal State Fullerton's Mariia Nikitash and Megan Tagaloa 8-5. The CSUN duo will face the No. 3 seed, San Diego's Elizabeth Goldsmith, and Kailey Evans on Friday.
Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna advanced to the round of 32 on Friday by handing Lu Chen and Rachel Wagner of UC San Diego an 8-6 defeat. Turchak and Zhytelna will face the No. 2 seed, Domenika Turkovic and Patricija Spaka of Arizona State.
SINGLES
Zhytelna defeated Yamamoto in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 128. She advanced to a round of 64 matchup against the No. 1 seed, USC's Eryn Cayetano. Zhytelna battled against Cayetano, who is ranked first in the preseason ITA singles, losing 6-3, 7-5
Santibañez Luna was edged by Arizona's Parker Fry in the round of 128. Fry opened the match with a 6-3 first-set victory. Santibañez Luna tied the match by winning the second match 6-3. Fry won the third set 6-1.
Playing singles for the first time since the Spring 2022 campaign (due to injury), Coetzee dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Loyola Marymount's Isabella Tcherkes-Zade in the round of 128.
Turchak fell in three sets to USC's Nathalie Rodilosso in the round of 128. Turchak won the opening set in a tiebreaker 7-5. Rodilsso tied the match 6-4 before taking the third 6-0.
PLAYER REACTION
"Playing against such schools as USC, I feel I can show my best game and show how fearless I am," Zhytelna said. "It was a great day for our team and I am proud to have represented CSUN at the regionals."
"I am happy to finally be back on the court, and compete again," Coetzee said. "The energy was great from the team, and we were very supportive of each other."
