HONOLULU, O'ahu – Taylor Orshoff led CSUN with nine kills but the Matadors dropped a straight-set decision to Hawai'i in a Big West match Friday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Orshoff hit .300 on 20 swings while three other Matador hitters added six kills but CSUN (7-15, 2-8) dropped its third straight as the Rainbow Wahine claimed the 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 win.
KEY STATISTICS
• Taylor Hunter was one of three Matadors with six kills as she hit a team-high .444 on nine swings. Fellow middle Lauryn Anderson also had six kills (.263) as did setter Carisa Barron who hit .200 on 15 attacks. Anderson also added one block and one ace.
• Senior Nicole Nevarez, needing 12 kills to reach 1,000 for her career, was limited to three kills (.050) but did scoop up a team-high nine digs.
• In addition to her six kills, Barron also added 13 assists and three digs while Emily Sparks also posted 13 assists to go with five digs.
• Hawai'i had advantages on the stat sheet, putting down 49 kills to CSUN's 30 while out-hitting the Matadors .381 to .168. The Rainbow Wahine also had six aces to CSUN's three and registered a 41-33 edge in digs and a 5.0-1.0 lead in blocks.
• Riley Wagoner led all hitters in the match with 16 kills (.467) to lead Hawai'i (11-6, 8-1) which also got 11 kills from Amber Igiede (.556).
SET 1
The Matadors stayed close early on as a Barron kill kept the Matadors within one at 3-2. Four straight points by the hosts pushed the lead to 7-2 before an Anderson kill ended the run. After another Barron kill kept the deficit at four (10-6), the Rainbow Wahine scored three straight to open up a 13-6 cushion. Kills by Barron and Orshoff highlighted a 4-0 Matador run that trimmed the Hawai'i lead to 13-10. CSUN would then surrender a decisive 7-0 run, spending both timeouts in the process, as the hosts led by double digits at 20-10. The Matadors would only get within nine the rest of the way as Hawai'i claimed the opening set 25-15.
SET 2
CSUN grabbed its first lead of the night when an Orshoff kill and a Hawai'i hitting error put the Matadors in front 2-1. CSUN maintained one-point leads at 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 when the hosts claimed four straight to take the lead for good at 8-5. A 3-1 CSUN run, capped by a Mitchell ace, pulled the Matadors within one at 9-8 before three straight Hawai'i points pushed the lead to four at 12-8. A Rainbow Wahine hitting error kept the CSUN deficit at three (13-10) before another lengthy Hawai'i run, this time 5-0, opened up an 18-10 margin. The Matadors would get within four several times down the stretch, the last at 22-18, before the hosts pulled away for the 25-18 win.
SET 3
After Hawai'i claimed five of the first seven points of the final set, the Matadors battled back to within one at 8-7 following consecutive Rainbow Wahine hitting errors. CSUN still trailed by a point at 9-8 when three straight points - sandwiched around a Matador timeout - pushed the Hawai'i lead to 12-8. Still down four at 13-9, the Matadors made one final push, highlighted by a Layla Cederlind ace, to pull within 14-11. The hosts answered with a 5-1 run to open up 19-12 advantage and would win going away, closing out a 25-18 win.
