Matadors Fall in Straight Sets to UC San Diego

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The CSUN women's volleyball team was out-hit .315 to .140 as the visiting UC San Diego Tritons swept the host Matadors, 25-12, 25-15, 25-22 in a Big West match Friday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Taylor Orshoff and Carisa Barron each had a team-high eight kills but CSUN (7-16, 2-9 Big West) was limited to a .140 hitting clip, a team low in a conference match this season.
KEY STATISTICS
• Orshoff was a bright spot for the Matadors, hitting .375 on 16 attacks while Barron connected at a .250 clip on 20 swings. Barron also handed out eight assists to go with four digs in the match.
• Senior Nicole Nevarez, needing nine kills to reach 1,000 for her career, was limited to four kills on 24 swings (.083) but did have three blocks (two solo) and three digs. Lauryn Anderson also had four kills (.077) along with four blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs.
• Emily Sparks posted 16 assists and two digs while libero Breanna Mitchell scooped up a team-high 10 digs.
• In addition to out-hitting the Matadors, the Tritons served eight aces to CSUN's two and out-dug the Matadors 39-29.
• Ava McInnes led all hitters in the match with 16 kills (.343) to lead UCSD which improved to 11-12 overall and 4-7 in the Big West.
COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"San Diego served better, they passed better and they played better defense. When you add those three things together, you lose in three sets and that's what happened tonight."
SET 1
After Taylor Hunter's kill opened up an early 3-1 CSUN lead, the visitors rolled off three straight points to take a 4-3 lead. A kill by Barron followed by a UCSD hitting error put the Matadors back in front 5-4. The Tritons then engineered a 13-4 run to open up a 17-8 lead before an Anderson kill ended the run. Leading by sox at 18-12, UCSD closed the set on a 7-0 run to close out a 25-12 win.
SET 2
After being out-hit .312 to .057 in the opening frame, CSUN hit .107 in set two while the Tritons upped their hitting to .448. Neither team led by more than one until an Ava McInnes kill put the Tritons up by two at 10-8. UCSD would add on from there, outscoring the Matadors 8-1 over the next nine points to extend the margin to 18-9. A solo block by Nevarez kept CSUN within seven at 18-11 but CSUN would get no closer the rest of the way.
SET 3
After hitting .079 over the first two sets, the Matadors hit .267 in the final set. After Orshoff's kill pulled CSUN even at 17-17, the Matadors were forced into a timeout after UCSD scored four straight. A co-block from Anderson and Nevarez cut the lead to three at 21-18 and CSUN would also trail by three at 23-20 and 24-21 before an Elizabeth Gannon ace trimmed the defecit to two at 24-22. But a Gannon service error out of a UCSD timeout ended the match.
