CSUN Opens Road Swing at Utah Tech on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball hits the road for the first time this season on Saturday when the Matadors visit Utah Tech. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. PDT on ESPN+. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister have the call in an audio broadcast at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors opened the 2022-23 season with a wire-to-wire victory over La Sierra (NAIA) by a 90-55 final on Monday at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Five Matadors scored in double figures led by Adam Afifi who scored 15 points off the bench in his Matador debut. Atin Wright added 14 points while Marcel Stevens scored a career-high 11 points. Also, making their Matador debut, De'Sean Allen-Eikens had 11 points and Dearon Tucker added 10 points.
CSUN led by five points early in the second half before going on a 27-6 run to break open the contest. In the second half, the Matadors outscored the Golden Eagles 53-27. The Matadors shot 51.4 percent from the field and made 10-of-24 from 3-point range (41.7 percent). CSUN held a 44-30 edge in rebounds and 52-12 advantage in points in the paint.
The Matadors had 23 assists in the game and committed six turnovers. The team's 23 assists were its most since registering 26 on Nov. 25, 2020 against Westmont. CSUN also posted its biggest margin of victory since defeating San Francisco State by 35 points on Dec. 22, 2019.
MATADOR HEADLINES
A total of 10 Matadors made their debut with the program against La Sierra. Both starting for CSUN, De'Sean Allen-Eikens made 3-of-5 from 3-point range to go with his 11 points and Dionte Bostick finished with four assists and three points. Adam Afifi would go 7-of-8 from the field in his 15-point debut while Ethan Igbanugo had five points, five rebounds and five assists. Dearon Tucker scored his 10 points in just 16 minutes of action. The freshman trio of Cam Slaymaker, Johnnie Walter and Lamine Niang finished with five, two and two points, respectively. John Wade III and Ben Starks also saw action in the win.
Among the Matador returners, Onyi Eyisi had a team-high 10 rebounds to go with his eight points versus La Sierra while Marcel Stevens made 3-of-4 from 3-point range in his 11-point performance. Atin Wright also had three assists and two steals to go with his 14 points. Arman Pezeshkian made his first career basket as a Matador in the final minute against La Sierra.

CSUN will play the rest of the month of November on the road beginning Saturday night at Utah Tech. The Matadors visit California Baptist on Tuesday to take on the Lancers before heading to San Juan Capistrano for the SoCal Challenge. CSUN faces Tennessee State on Nov. 21 to open the SoCal Challenge before meeting either Central Michigan or High Point two days later. The month concludes with a road test at defending Mountain West Conference champion Boise State on Nov. 29.

The Matadors prevailed 79-73 in the contest, rallying from a 12-point deficit including a nine-point hole in the second half. Atin Wright led the Matadors with 18 points while Onyi Eyisi chipped in with 13 in the victory.
SCOUTING UTAH TECH
The Trailblazers dropped their season opener at Nevada, 84-71, on Monday. Utah Tech finished last season with a 13-18 record and 6-12 mark in the WAC. Prior to the season, Utah Tech was picked to finished 12th in the WAC by the league's head coaches. The team is in its third season competing at the Division I level. Head coach Jon Judkins is in his 18th season leading the program.
Utah Tech returns four starters and eight letterwinners from last season's team. Cameron Gooden is the team's top returning scorer at 11.5 points per game to go with a team-high 3.6 assists per game last season. Dancell Leter had a team-best 5.2 rebound average in 2022-23 while he scored 10.3 points per game. Another key returner is Frank Staine who averaged 8.8 points and 3.7 rebounds a season ago.
