Mitchell Earns Second Big West Player of the Week Awards

IRVINE, Calif. - CSUN libero Breanna Mitchell was named both Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week for the second time this season as The Big West announced its weekly awards on Monday.

Mitchell collected 51 digs while averaging 5.67 digs per set as the Matadors split road matches at UC Riverside and UC Davis last week. Mitchell_Breanna_22

In Thursday night's come-from-behind five-set victory at UC Riverside, the true freshman out of Temecula and Linfield Christian School equaled the program's rally-scoring-era single-match record of 34 digs to lead all players. That total is also the fourth-best in school history overall, and tied for second-most in a Big West contest in 2022.

On Saturday afternoon in a four-set loss at UC Davis, Mitchell added a team-high 17 digs along with a pair of aces.

Mitchell is now a two-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week and Big West Freshman of the Week, having also earned the pair of recognitions together back on Sept. 19.

"As I said when Bre won the awards in September, it's hard for any freshman to come in a make an immediate impact at any position in the Big West and she has continued to do just that," said CSUN head coach John Price. "She's worked hard and continues to get better each match and it's nice to see her get some recognition for her good play."

CSUN opens the final week of the 2022 season Tuesday as the Matadors travel to UC Santa Barbara for their final road match. CSUN hosts Hawai'i on Saturday at 7 p.m to conclude the season.
