Brockway's Career-High 25 Kills leads CSUN to First Win

BOULDER, Colo. - Senior Hailey Brockway put down a career-high 25 kills Sunday as CSUN earned its first win of the season with a four-set victory over Central Arkansas on Sunday at the CU Events Center.
The Matadors (1-2) defeated the Sugar Bears 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17 to come away 1-2 at Colorado's Buffs Classic. CSUN hit a season-high .280 (61-21-143) as a team, also posting a season-high  61 kills, while controlling the match with 15.0 team blocks while holding Central Arkansas to a team hitting clip of .115 (45-28-148).
Brockway led the way with a career performance, finishing with 25 kills on 55 swings to hit .291. The senior from Graham, Wash., also added 13 digs, four blocks and a service ace for her second double-double in three matches in Colorado.
Fellow senior Tatiana Turgeon, who was named to the All-Tournament team, also had an impressive finale, matching her career-high with 10 kills on 14 swings without an error for a .714 hitting clip. She also added nine blocks (one solo block and eight assists) and one dig. Sophomore Fallyn Blotzer chipped in eight kills (.250), six digs and four block assists, while Annie Gilmore had seven kills (.150) and four blocks. Audrey Nuckols added six kills on 14 attacks to hit.357 in the win.
CSUN's setters kept the offense balanced, with Katie Kolar handing out 27 assists with five digs and Jan Marie Duhaylungsod adding 26 assists and eight digs. Paige Sentes capped a solid weekend with a match-high 19 digs and served two of the Matadors' three aces. Sentes had a team-high 52 digs in CSUN's three matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors set the tone early, hitting .351 in the opening set behind five kills apiece from Brockway and Turgeon. CSUN used a mid-set run to create separation and finished the frame with 17 kills in a 25-19 win.

CSUN carried that momentum into the second set, building a big early lead behind strong serving from Sentes and steady swings from Brockway. The Matadors held Central Arkansas to a negative hitting percentage in the frame and took the set, 25-16.
After Central Arkansas extended the match with a 25-21 win in the third, CSUN answered with its sharpest offensive set of the day. The Matadors hit .484 in the fourth, committing just three attacking errors, while Brockway delivered eight kills on 15 swings. CSUN pulled away late and closed the match with a 25-17 victory.

HEAD COACH AQUILES MONTOYA SAID
"It's always good to end these long road weekends with a win. We liked that we got back to playing our game. And while we slipped up in the third set, I am very proud of how our team responded in the fourth to close out the match. We will use this experience as we hit the road again next week, but some well-deserved rest will be just as valuable for us as some training on things we saw this week."
UP NEXT
The Matadors remain on the road next week, traveling to Manhattan, Kan. to meet host Kansas State and Drake at the Wildcat Classic (Sept. 4-5).
