FORÂ STARTERS
The CSUN women's volleyball team (7-19, 2-12 Big West) begins the homestretch of the 2022 season this week with home matches against Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors take on the Beach Friday at 7 p.m. before welcoming the Titans to Premier America Credit Union Arena Saturday at 5 p.m. CSUN heads into the week looking to snap a seven-match winless streak dating back to a five-set win over UC Davis on Oct. 14.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Long Beach State (15-7, 10-4 Big West), which is tied for third in the Big West standings, had its nine-match winning streak end at SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center as Hawaii defeated the Beach in straight sets last Friday. The Beach posted 12.0 total team blocks, while hitting .202 with 39 kills in the loss. Senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach led the Beach at the net as she posted eight total blocks, including four solo stops.
Series: Friday's match is the 50th meeting all-time between CSUN and Long Beach State with the Beach leading the series, 36-13. The Beach won this season's first match in five sets, the eighth straight Long Beach State wins in the series.
Cal State Fullerton (12-10, 6-8 Big West), which travels to UC Santa Barbara on Friday, also lost to Hawai'i in straight sets Saturday in Honolulu. Lolo Fonua led the Titans with 11 kills on a .500 clip while Fullerton hit just .121 clip as a team.Â
Series: Saturday's match is the 55th meeting all-time between CSUN and Cal State Fullerton with the Matadors holding a commanding 40-14 lead in the series. The Titans have won three straight matches, including a 3-2 win in Fullerton on Oct. 7. CSUN is 22-4 all-time against Cal State Fullerton in Northridge.
NEVAREZ BECOMES 14TH CSUN PLAYER WITH 1,000 CAREER KILLS
With the ninth kill against UC Irvine on Oct. 29, senior Nicole Nevarez became the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. With 261 kills this season, Nevarez has moved into 13th place on the all-time CSUN kills list with 1,022. She passed Ana Khristich who had 1,004 kills from 1991-94 and is now within eight kills of tying Nancy Ma (1,030) for 12th place. Nevarez heads into Friday's match having appeared in 110 matches and 414 career sets while posting 1,022 career kills on 3,128 career attempts to go with 799 career digs, 193 career blocks and 72 career aces. She has moved into the CSUN all-time top-10 in career attacks (10th) and recently moved into the CSUN Rally Scoring era top-10 in a pair of categories, she is currently seventh in attacks and eighth in kills. Her best season offensively was in 2019 when she connected for 285 kills while she set a season-high for digs with 245 in 2021. This season, Nevarez is hitting a season-high .209 on a team-high 767 swings.

BARRON LEADS BIG WEST WITH FIVE TRIPLE-DOUBLESÂ
After posting her first career triple-double in CSUN's five-set win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16, Carisa Barron has notched four triple-doubles in 14 Big West matches. The only Big West women's volleyball player with multiple triple-doubles this season (UC Riverside's Tayler Hifo has one), Barron has three triples in her last six matches. The sophomore from Bakersfield, who notched her fifth of the season against CSU Bakersfield (11 kills-10 digs-17 assists) last Saturday, has emerged as one of CSUN's top offensive threats this season, ranks third on the Matadors with 199 kills (1.97 kps) while also averaging a team-high 5.18 assists per set and 2.17 digs per set. With 577 attacks this season, she has taken the most swings from the setter spot since Sydney Gedryn had 406 attacks in 2012.
CSUN QUICK SETS
The Matadors head into home matches this week against Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton with a 2-5 record at Premier America Credit Union Arena this season. CSUN has three home matches still remaining this season, hosting Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State this weekend before welcoming Hawai'i to the Valley on Nov. 26.Â
PRICE NAMED CSUN'SÂ DIRECTOR OF WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
John Price was named Director of Women's Volleyball at CSUN in June of 2022. He will oversee both the indoor and beach volleyball programs. Price returned to the CSUN indoor program in 2021 where he served as an assistant on interim head coach Susie Terrusa's staff. Price previously as an assistant coach on Jeff Stork's women's volleyball coaching staff from 2012-2015. He also served one season as the head coach of the CSUN women's volleyball team in 1993, compiling a record of 12-17 as an NCAA Independent.
Price's CSUN resume also includes 12 seasons as the head coach of the nationally-ranked Matador men's volleyball team (1986-1997) where he amassed an overall record of 194-158 (.551) leading CSUN to a 23-10 record and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Championship match where the Matadors fell to UCLA. Price then moved on to CSU Bakersfield women's volleyball and remains the winningest coach in program history. He posted a career record of 232-169 (.579) over 14 seasons, leading the Roadrunners to a 28-4 overall record in his first season. Price was also at the helm of the CSUB program when the school made the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Price's 2008 squad was the first Roadrunner team in any sport to post a winning record (18-15) in the school's Division I era.
LOOKING AHEAD
After a pair of home matches this weekend, the Matadors open their final road trip of the season Nov. 17 at UC Riverside.
