CSUN Drops Season Opener at #22 UCLA
2/18/2022 10:10:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Baseball dropped a 9-2 decision to No. 22 UCLA in the 2022 season opener at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Andrew Sojka drove in both of the Matadors' run on the day and reached base twice while Bart West and Gabe Gonzalez also tallied hits. The Bruins out-hit the Matadors 16-3 in the game.
The Matadors would record two of their three hits on the night in the bottom of the second inning following back-to-back two-out hits from West and Gonzalez. However, UCLA starter Jake Brooks retired Victor Cerny on a grounder to end the threat.
Earning the opening day start, Blaine Traxel got off to a strong start on the mound for the Matadors. The right hander struck out the first two batters to begin the first inning and would retire Kenny Oyama two batters later.
An inning later though the Bruins turned the tables with the first three batters recording hits. Kyle Karros broke the scoreless tie with an RBI triple before Ethan Gourson picked up an RBI single of his own to make it a 2-0 game.
Traxel bounced back with a shutout third inning, leaving two more Bruins on the base paths but UCLA would break through again in the fourth. Three of the first four Bruins reached to kick off the inning with Oyama coming away with an RBI single. After Cody Schrier hit a sacrifice fly, Michael Curialle collected another RBI hit to knock Traxel out of the game. Jake Moberg would cap off a five-run inning with an RBI single to put the Bruins ahead 6-0.
The Matadors would strand two runners in the fourth inning before Brooks retired five-straight batters to end his night on the mound with five shutout innings.
CSUN gave up a single run in the bottom of the fifth before cracking the scoring column an inning later. Ali Camarillo worked a walk to start the inning then Joey Kramer drove a flyball to left field that was mishandled, putting two runners into scoring position. Sojka came to the plate next and rifled a two-run double into left-center field. The Matadors though could not come away with more runs as West and Gonzalez both struck out.
Malakhi Knight hit a leadoff home run in the seventh before UCLA added another run via a double play later in the frame.
UCLA's bullpen kept the Matadors at bay over the late innings as the final eight CSUN batters were retired in order.
GAME NOTES
A total of six Matadors made their debut with the program on Friday with Camarillo, Kramer, Sojka and West earning starts. Diego Gutierrez tossed 2.1 innings out of the bullpen in his first collegiate game, allowing four hits and one unearned run. Sebastian Garcia took over behind the plate in the eighth inning and caught the final two frames.
For UCLA, Curialle finished 4-for-5 at the plate with an RBI while Oyama had two hits and two RBI. Brooks allowed two hits over five shutout innings to earn the victory.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I think UCLA played better than us tonight. You've got to tip your hat to them. I thought Traxel threw the ball pretty good but their approach was really good at the plate. There hasn't been many times where Blaine's gone out there and thrown 84 pitches in four innings. That's just a credit to their offense."
"As I've said to the team, and I've coached for a long time, there's a huge disadvantage for a program that doesn't get to play under the lights or practices under the lights and gets to play their season opener against a program that has good arms. I knew without telling our team that tonight was going to be the toughest game of the series because we were playing under the lights for the first time in a year. Not a crutch, you have to tip your hat to UCLA, they played well. If you look at the scoreboard, it was a pretty lopsided game but I thought our guys played in character."

CSUN continues its weekend series with UCLA on Saturday at 2 p.m. UCLA will provide a live video stream of the game.
