Matadors Notch 6-4 Win Over #22 UCLA
2/19/2022 6:20:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (1-1) knocked off No. 22 UCLA 6-4 to earn its first win of the season on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Blake Sodersten tossed six shutout innings, allowing four hits to pick up the win while the Matador offense scored in five consecutive frames from the fourth inning onward. Mason Le finished 3-of-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored while Kai Moody and Joey Kramer had home runs.
It would be a pitcher's duel in the early innings on Saturday with neither side having a base runner until the third inning. UCLA's Max Rajcic retired the Matadors in order over the first three frames while Sodersten sat down the first eight batters to start the game. The Bruins threatened in the third inning after a throwing error on the infield and a walk put two runners on base but Sodersten escaped the jam unscathed.
Le would be the first Matador base runner of the game when he singled through the left side. Ali Camarillo followed with a bunt hit before Moody sacrificed both runners into scoring position, allowing Kramer to hit a sacrifice fly. CSUN went ahead 2-0 an inning later on a Le RBI single that plated Sebastian Garcia
Meanwhile, Sodersten worked in and out of trouble in the home halves of the fourth and fifth innings. The right-hander stranded runners at first and second in the fourth when he forced Malakhi Knight to ground out. An inning later, the Bruins picked up two hits to start the fifth before Sodersten struck out Cody Schrier and induced a 4-6-3 double play.
The Matadors' offense continued to tack on runs in support of Sodersten. Moody hit a first-pitch home run in the sixth to straightaway center field. In the seventh, Sebastian Garcia was hit by a pitch before Brandon Bohning legged out a bunt hit. Le delivered again with a double in the gap in left center to plate a run. Ali Camarillo followed with a safety squeeze play to bring home Bohning, giving CSUN a 5-0 lead.
Sodersten wrapped up his time on the mound, retiring three of four batters in the sixth to make way for the CSUN bullpen. Gavin Lizik would take over in the seventh and pitch around a leadoff walk before Lucas Braun pitched a shutout eighth.
After Kramer hit a leadoff home run in the eighth to extend the lead to 6-0, the Matadors appeared in control heading into the late innings. Right-hander Kyle Hoskins though ran into trouble in the ninth as he allowed the first four batters to reach. Jack Holman delivered the big blow, a three-run double to cut the six-run lead in half.
Blake Schriever was summoned to put a stop to the rally but the next two batters would reach to load the bases. Michael Curialle stepped to the plate as the go-ahead run and would hit a comebacker to the mound where Schriever would start a 1-2-3 double play. UCLA loaded the bases again before a wild pitch made it a 6-4 game. However, Schriever finally put an end to the rally by forcing Jake Moberg to fly out to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Le matched his career-high in hits with his three on the afternoon. Bohning finished with two hits in the game while Garcia, in his first career start at catcher, scored twice. Schriever earned his 16th career save in what was his first appearance since April 2, 2021. The Matadors' win snapped a four-game skid to UCLA.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I'm happy for our team that we got that first win of our season against a good UCLA team. I was very proud of Blake Sodersten and how he responded today. I felt he pitched with the best attitude in my two-plus years of being around him. We made some big double plays and the offense functioned well today. We had some big bunt hits, some big AB's with two outs and guys came through when we needed them to. Overall, this was a good win for our team after what happened on opening day."
