Matadors Complete Series Sweep of Pacific with 14-6 Win
2/27/2022 4:38:00 PM | Baseball
The Tigers came out quickly in the top of the first inning, grabbing their first lead of the series on a two-run home run from Ben Nemivant to right field. Three batters later, with a runner at first base, Brandon Motheral smacked another two-run homer to quickly push the lead to 4-0. CSUN starter Diego Gutierrez would give up two more singles in the first before working out of further trouble by retiring Jarryd Wood.Â
The first seven Matadors were retired to start the game, however, CSUN broke through in the fourth inning. After Graysen Tarlow and Brandon Bohning picked up singles, the Matadors would load the bases with two outs when Ali Camarillo was hit by a pitch. Moody stepped to the plate next and battled back from a 0-2 count to smack a grand slam over the left-field fence to tie the game.
Martinez entered out of the bullpen in the second inning and gave the Matadors a much needed lift on the mound. The right-hander pitched around a CSUN error in the second and a single in the third before the Tigers put their first runner in scoring position in the fourth. Martinez though retired the final two batters of the inning to keep the game tied. The freshman would pitch into the sixth inning, allowing only a run on two hits to go with a strikeout.
The Matadors again leaned on the long ball in the bottom of the fourth inning when Porter belted a two-run home run just over fence in right center field. Camarillo added to the lead with a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning, pushing the lead to 7-4.
In the fifth and sixth innings, CSUN capitalized on four walks and one hit batter to stretch its lead even further. Joey Kramer collected an RBI triple in the fifth while Bohning brought in another run when he was hit by a pitch. The lead extended to 10-4 in the sixth on a two-out RBI hit from Gabe Gonzalez.
However, Pacific chipped away at the lead, scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh to pull to within 10-6. The Matadors though responded with their fourth multiple-run frame in the bottom of the eighth to break the game open. Bart West and Mason Le picked up RBI singles in the eighth while Bohning hit a sacrifice fly. CSUN scored its 14th and final run of the day on a throwing error from catcher Jeremy Lea when Tarlow stole third.
GAME NOTES
Sebastian Granados, Gavin Lizik and Lucas Braun combined to toss the final 2.1 innings for CSUN, allowing a combined one hit and no runs.
All nine Matador starters in the lineup had at least one hit in the game in addition to West who came off the bench in the seventh as a defensive replacement. Bohning finished with two RBI while Andrew Sojka and Tarlow scored three times apiece.
The Matadors completed their first four-game non-conference sweep since 2016 when they swept Houston Baptist. CSUN has now won eight-straight games at Matador Field dating back to last season.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"It's hard enough to sweep a three-game series but it's really hard to sweep a four-game series. Then you throw in the conditions we played in this weekend, beautiful days but windy as it can get in this ballpark. A lot of good things happened and a lot of things we can improve on. Typical during my coaching career, we run out a freshman in his first collegiate start and he made it bigger than it was, and he'll learn from that. Xavier Martinez really got the momentum back on our side. He came in and pitched really well --- he got a little tired later."
"Today though was about teammates picking up teammates whether it was on the mound or at home plate. We passed the baton on the mound from pitcher to pitcher. Some guys got one out, some guys got two outs and some guys got some innings in. From the offensive side, when we gave up an at-bat with runners in scoring position, a teammate picked up someone else. Overall, it wasn't about the four wins, it was about how we overcame a lot of things this weekend.
UP NEXT
CSUN hits the road next weekend for the start of a 12-game road trip. The Matadors will play nationally-ranked Stanford to open the road swing in a three-game series starting Friday, March 4 at 2 p.m.
