Matadors Take Down #2 Stanford to Open Series
3/4/2022 5:58:00 PM | Baseball
CSUN would jump on Stanford in the opening inning when Mason Le doubled to kick off the game. After a sacrifice bunt from Ali Camarillo, Kai Moody brought home Le with a sacrifice fly to quickly put the Matadors on top 1-0. CSUN increased its lead an inning later thanks to heads up base running. With runners at the corners and two outs, CSUN pushed across a run on a double steal as Drew Porter touched home plate.
The third inning would see the Matadors stretch their lead off one swing of the bat from Gonzalez. After Moody drew a walk and Sojka singled, Gonzalez hammered a 3-2 pitcher over the left-center wall to give CSUN a 5-0 lead.
On the flip side, Traxel helped frustrate the Cardinal at the plate throughout his seven-plus innings of work. He pitched around a pair of hits in the first and a two-out hit in the third. The only blemish on the day would come in the fourth when Stanford homered three times but the right-hander bounced back to retire five of the next seven batters to maintain a CSUN 5-3 edge through five innings.
CSUN picked up a key insurance run in the sixth after Brandon Bohning tripled and scored on a throwing error to home plate. Gonzalez then added to his RBI total in the seventh with a two-run single, plating Sojka and Moody.
After Drew Bowser singled to start the bottom of the sixth, Traxel found his rhythm on the mound by retiring seven consecutive batters including picking up four strikeouts along the way. Xavier Martinez relieved Traxel with one out in the seventh and retired two of three batters to take a five-run lead to ninth.
Sojka gave the Matadors a 9-3 lead on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth before the combination of Gavin Lizik and Blake Schriever tossed a shutout bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I'm very proud of our guys. That's a good win against maybe one of the best teams in the country. I'm happy about the win but maybe more satisfied with how we stayed in character and played Dors baseball. Our offense broke down a good starting pitcher and Gabe Gonzalez had the big three-run home run. I can't say enough about Blaine Traxel and the start he gave us today. As always, he battled and set the tone for us after we got the early lead."
GAME NOTES
Stanford was ranked No. 2 by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Feb. 28 while three other publications had the Cardinal in the top-six. With the win, CSUN earned its first victory over a No. 2 team since defeating Cal State Fullerton during the 2003 season. CSUN also notched its first top-10 win since beating No. 8 UCLA in 2013.
Traxel scattered nine hits on the day while he allowed no walks. As a pitching staff, CSUN yielded just one walk in the game.
Kramer extended his on-base streak to eight consecutive games. Le finished 2-for-5 with a run scored while Graysen Tarlow had a 2-for-4 day.
