NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A short-handed CSUN Beach Volleyball team dropped a pair of dual matches Tuesday as the visiting Westcliff Warriors knocked off the Matadors twice at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex.
WESTCLIFF 4, CSUNÂ 1
The visiting Warriors earned the first team point of the dual when Kylie Cordero and Brooke Scheidle defeated Lauren Eknoian and Layla Cederlind in straight sets in the No. 2 pair, 21-17, 21-10. CSUN evened the match at one win apiece after Abbey Sweeting and Jadin Williams pulled out a three-set win (22-20, 10-21, 15-11) over Elise Brown and Leanna Zamora in the No. 5 contest. The opening flight finished with a three-set battle at No. 4 as Madison Shepston and Ava Wright knocked off the Matadors' Kailey Klein and Victoria Rogers by the score of 21-17, 15-21, 16-14
Westcliff would then claim both matches in the second flight to earn the 4-1 team win and its first-ever win over CSUN. Gianna Guinasso and Sierra Lim topped Seyvion Waggoner and Mikaela Maughan in the No. 1 pair (21-16, 21-18) to clinch the win. The last pair to go final was the No. 3's as Elena Eckhardt and Megan Yoon swept True McCullough and Madison Klungel, 21-19, 21-19. Â

CSUN looked to rebound in the afternoon dual and Klein and Rogers got the Matadors on the board first in the No. 4 pair, defeating Shepston and Wright, 21-8, 23-21. Westcliff's No. 5 team of Jesse Coralle and Kenedi MacDonald knocked off Sweeting and Williams in three sets (23-25, 23-21, 15-6) to even the match at one win apiece. Eknoian and Cederlind then put the Matadors in front, coming back from a one-set deficit to earn a three-set win (20-22, 21-9, 16-14) over Cordero and Scheidle at No. 2.
The visiting Warriors picked up their second win in the No. 3 pair as Eckhardt and Yoon swept McCullough and Klungel 21-15, 21-11 to set up the decisive match on center court. After dropping the first set 21-17, Waggoner and Maughan battled back to win set two over Guinasso and Lim by the score of 22-20. That set up the deciding third set and the Warriors' pair pulled out a 15-9 win for the 3-2 team win.Â

COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"We were short-handed today but I thought Westcliff played well and they made some shots. Two of our five teams had a player that only had one exhibition match under her belt so that made it tough. I feel like we were well prepared coming in and could have found a way to win but we didn't respond to adversity very well. We'll regroup and get ready for Nebraska and Concordia on Thursday."
