CSUN Defeats Nebraska and The Master's in Friday Tri-Dual

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Matador Beach Volleyball team won a pair of dual matches, defeating Nebraska and The Master's University Friday at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex. The Matadors (7-7) topped Nebraska, 3-2 in the opener before sweeping the Mustangs in the final dual of the afternoon.
CSUNÂ 3, NEBRASKA 2
For the second day in a row, the Matadors picked up a 3-2 win over the visiting Huskers. Kailey Klein and Victoria Rogers took the No. 4 pair for the second straight day, topping Hayden Kubik and Lindsay Krause in straight sets (21-18, 21-18) to earn CSUN's first point. Seyvion Waggoner and Mikaela Maughan fell in the No. 2 pair as Nebraska's Lexi Rodriguez and Bekka Allick held off the Matador pair in three sets (20-22, 24-22, 15-9) to even the dual at one win apiece.
Nebraska took a 2-1 lead to open the second flight as Nicklin Hames and Whitney Lauenstein defeated Abbey Sweeting and Jadin Williams in straight sets (21-14, 21-19). Lauren Eknoian and Victoria Rogers then swept the No. 1 pair over Madi Kubik and Kenzi Knuckles by the score of 21-10, 21-16 to pull CSUN event at 2-2. The dual match would come down to the No. 3 pair and CSUN's Darbi Honeycutt and Layla Cederlind would earn hard-fought 21-14, 21-23, 15-10 victory over Ally Batenhorst and Keonilei Akana to send the Matadors to the team win.

CSUNÂ 5, THE MASTER'S 0
After Nebraska picked up a win over The Master's in the middle dual, CSUN swept all five pairs from the Mustangs in the final dual. Maughan and Waggoner swept Evie Yates and Kasie Spencer at No. 2 by the score of 22-20, 21-13 before Klein and Rogers made quick work of Emily Grace Williams and Annika Booker in the No. 4 pair, winning 21-9, 21-19.
Honeycutt and Cederlind opened the second flight by defeating Tara Long and Kaylie Phelps at No. 3 by the same 21-19, 21-9 score to clinch CSUN's seventh win of the season. Eknoian and Sparks then won in straight sets (21-16, 21-17) over Chloe Johnson and Kassidy Wilson in the No. 1 pair before Sweeting and Williams capped the day with a 26-24, 21-9 victory over CJ Catabona and Zie Kira in the No. 5 contest.

"We were short-handed again today so it was nice to see the team step up and handle the adversity better than we did at the beginning of the week. Beating the same team twice in consecutive days isn't easy to do and to defeat Nebraska for a second time in two days was nice to see."

CSUN (7-7) concludes its eight-match week Saturday when the Matadors host Boise State and Cal State LA in a tri-dual beginning at 11 a.m.
