CSUN Cannot Overcome Another Cal Poly Five-Run Inning in 8-4 Loss
3/19/2022 5:32:00 PM | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---For the second-straight day, a five-run inning would be key for Cal Poly as CSUN (10-8, 0-2 Big West) fell 8-4 on Saturday at Baggett Stadium. Bart West belted a three-run home run in the game while Brandon Bohning drove in the Matadors' fourth run later in the contest. Elias Jauregui tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Â
Building off the momentum of last night's victory, Cal Poly cracked the scoring column first in the opening inning on an RBI triple from Brooks Lee before adding two more in the second on a two-run home run from John Lagattuta for a 3-0 lead.
Â
CSUN stranded four base runners through the first two innings but would battle back in the third inning behind two-out hitting. After Andrew Sojka singled with one out, Joey Kramer kept the inning alive with a two-out single. West would follow with a three-run shot that cleared the wall in left field to tie the game at 3-3.
Â
Cal Poly though wasted little time answering back in the home half of the third, scoring five times on just two hits. The first two Mustangs reached to start the inning before Tate Samuelson laid down a bunt. A costly CSUN miscue on the bunt attempt allowed Brooks Lee to score from second base and break the 3-3 tie. Another run would be forced in on two consecutive walks then Lagattuta added to his RBI total with a single to plate Samuelson. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Reagan Doss extended the lead to 8-3.
After the rocky first three innings on the mound, the Matadors righted the ship over the next five frames. CSUN starter Ryan Wentz bounced back after the third inning to toss a scoreless fourth before being lifted from the game with one out in the fifth.
Jauregui entered out of the bullpen in the fifth and would silence the Mustang bats over the next 3.2 innings. The right-hander went on to retire the first 10 batters he faced before escaping a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth.
The Matadors plated a single run in the top of the sixth behind a two-out RBI single from Bohning that drove in West. CSUN though stranded two base runners in the sixth before leaving a runner aboard in the seventh and eighth innings.
CSUN forged one last rally in the top of the ninth when Jakob Simons and Kai Moody reached to start the inning. However, Mustang reliever Kyle Scott retired the next three batters to nail down a save.

GAME NOTES
West has homered in two of the last three games. The graduate transfer previously went without a home run in his first 54 collegiate games. Along with West, Bohning and Sojka had two-hit games on Saturday.

ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I believe today was a result of a hangover effect from Friday night's tough loss. Cal Poly carried the momentum into the start of the game today. We did respond in a great way down 3-0 when Bart West had the big three-run home run. But when we went back on defense, we again allowed them to have a big inning. Like last night, it was a walk then a big error on defense, which they capitalized on. Our team kept trying to fight back, but many times our innings were stopped with runners on when we could not come away with the big hit. I thought Elias Jauregui did a very good job of keeping Cal Poly at bay with his three innings of shutout relief. In a losing effort, Elias' innings saved our bullpen for tomorrow when we try to salvage the final game of this series. We need to come out and play better baseball tomorrow."Â
