CSUN Baseball Opens Big West Play at Cal Poly This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (10-6) kicks off the Big West season this weekend with a three-game series at Cal Poly. The opener is set for Friday at 6 p.m. and will continue on Saturday at 4 p.m. before closing on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Matadors close a 12-game road stretch this weekend when the team visits San Luis Obispo. During the road stretch, the Matadors have gone 5-4, posting wins in four of the last five games. The 12-straight games on the road is the team's longest stretch in a season since 2015.
CSUN holds an all-time 123-113 lead in the head-to-head series with Cal Poly. The Matadors have not played a team more in baseball than Cal Poly in their 64-year history. The Mustangs have won the last two weekend series between the two teams as well as seven of the last eight meetings. CSUN dropped three of four games to Cal Poly last season at Matador Field with the Mustangs posting victories in the last three games. Since joining the Big West, the Matadors have won only one series in San Luis Obispo with that win taking place in 2006 in a non-conference series.
CSUN won its second-straight game on Tuesday with a 7-4 triumph at Loyola Marymount. The Matadors scored four runs in the fourth inning, all with two outs, to surge ahead of the Lions in the win. Bart West hammered a game-tying two-run home run in the fourth inning while Brandon Bohning and Jakob Simons picked up an RBI apiece in the frame. Bohning would drive in three more runs in the win including a two-run blast in the eighth. Blake Schriever pitched two perfect innings to close out the game for his third save of the season.
The trio of Joey Kramer, West and Bohning produced three hits apiece in the victory over LMU. West finished a triple shy of the cycle while Bohning tied a career-high in RBI with four. Gavin Lizik was credited with the win after working 1.2 innings, allowing a run. In all, six different Matadors took the mound in the game.
West paces the Matadors with a .371 average this season, which ranks fifth in the Big West, to go with seven runs and four RBI. Kramer tops the Big West with 15 runs scored while Kai Moody is second on the list with 14 runs. Moody shares the league lead in home runs with Gabe Gonzalez with four. On the pitching side, Blaine Traxel and Blake Sodersten are tied for the conference lead in wins with three apiece. Traxel is also first in the league in innings pitched (29.0) and seventh in strikeouts (24).
As a team, the Matadors lead the Big West with 106 runs scored and 17 home runs. CSUN is also second in the Big West in team batting average at a .271 clip.
A Closer Look at Cal Poly
The Mustangs have gone 7-9 overall this season. Cal Poly split a four-game series with Harvard last weekend in San Luis Obispo. The team has played 10 games at Baggett Stadium this season, winning four times. The Mustangs were picked to finish fourth in the Big West standings at the start of the year. Head coach Larry Lee is in his 20th season at the helm of the program.
An All-American and last season's Big West Co-Field Player of the Year, Brooks Lee is batting .444 with three home runs, 23 RBI and a .778 slugging percentage. Ryan Stafford is hitting .313 at the plate to go with 14 runs scored and seven RBI. On the mound, Drew Thorpe has racked up 44 strikeouts with a 2.22 ERA. As a team, the Mustangs lead the Big West in batting average (.274) and hits (152) while the pitching staff tops the league in strikeouts (171).
