Matadors Claim First Series Win Over Long Beach State Since 2010
3/27/2022 4:41:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (13-10, 2-4 Big West) received six-plus strong innings from Lucas Braun on the mound as the Matadors defeated Long Beach State (12-10, 3-3 Big West) 7-3 on Sunday at Matador Field to clinch a series victory. Mason Le finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while CJ Yogi hit his first career home run in the triumph. The series win for CSUN is the program's first over the Dirtbags since the 2010 season.
The Matadors would jump on the Dirtbags in the opening inning, taking advantage of a hit batsman and walk to start the game. Kai Moody delivered with an RBI single to quickly put the Matadors on the scoreboard. Two batters later, a throwing error from Chris Jimenez on a Bart West grounder allowed Andrew Sojka to score from second base. Le capped the scoring spree with an RBI single to plate Moody.
CSUN got back into the scoring column in the third inning to increase its lead to 5-0. After a one-out West single, Joey Kramer roped an RBI double in the gap in right-center field. Bohning followed two batters later with an RBI single to center.
The early runs would be enough for Braun who frustrated the Long Beach State offense throughout his six innings of work. Braun began the game by retiring 11 of the first 13 batters he faced, scattering two hits through the first four innings.
Braun ran into danger in the top of the fifth when a pair of singles including a throwing error on a Rocco Peppi bunt single led to an unearned run scoring. Braun though induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam.
The Dirtbags threatened again in the sixth against Braun, this time placing runners at second and third base with two outs. However, Braun came through again on the mound by striking out Charlie Loust for the third out.
CSUN increased its lead back to five runs in the bottom of the sixth when Yogi hammered a solo home run to left-center field.
The Matador pitching would have to work out of yet another jam in the seventh as Long Beach State loaded the bases on walks against the CSUN bullpen. Blake Schriever worked his way out of trouble though by retiring the final two batters with the bases full of Dirtbags.
Long Beach State picked up solo home runs from Tanner Carlson and Peppi over the final two frames but it would not be enough to catch the Matadors. Schriever sat down the final two batters in row to secure his fifth save of the season.
GAME NOTES
Braun finished with one unearned run allowed on five hits in the game to go with two strikeouts. Schriever worked the final three innings, yielding two runs, while striking out three to notch his 20th career save with the Matadors.
The trio of Bohning, Sojka and Le hit a team-high .333 in the series (4-for-12). West led the way with five RBI in the series win.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I'm very proud of Lucas. It started for him on Tuesday in the outing against Dixie State, he gave us four stellar innings there, and it carried over into today. He mixed well, pounded the zone. He made some big pitches when he had to. They had some guys on the pond and he made some big pitches. Pitching and defense go hand in hand, and I feel when he made some pitches I thought we did a wonderful job of turning some double plays. We get ourselves into some jams but we've been able to pitch out of them. Very proud of him and very proud of this team. Friday was a tough loss for me and I know for them. We had a good talk about one common goal and that's not individual stuff, it's about our team. I really believe these guys responded in the right way."
