USC Tops CSUN in High-Scoring Affair, 16-10
4/12/2022 7:00:00 PM | Baseball
The Trojans jumped on the Matadors early in the game, taking advantage of wind-aided flyballs to stake to sizeable lead. After USC picked up two hits to start the first inning, Adrian Colon-Rosado blasted a three-run homer to right-center field. USC continued to have success with the long ball in the second inning as D'Andre Smith, Tyresse Turner and Colon-Rosado each hit solo home runs for a 6-0 Trojan lead.
CSUN would get two runs back in the bottom of the second inning, first on a solo home run from West to right-center field. Brandon Bohning later made it a 6-2 game with a bunt single to score Graysen Tarlow from third base.
However, USC responded quickly in the top of the third inning. After the first two batters reached, Tyler Lozano hammered a three-run home run to push the lead to seven. Rhylan Thomas smacked USC's six home run of the game, a two-run shot, later in the frame for an 11-2 lead.
The Matadors were blanked in the third but bounced back to score two in the home half of the fourth. West began the frame with a double before later scoring on an RBI single from Nathan Barraza. A USC error on a Mason Le groundball allowed the Matadors fourth run to come around to score in the inning.
Le hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the deficit to 11-5 but the Matadors could not draw closer. The Trojans put up a four spot in the top of the eighth and added a single tally in the ninth to extend to a 16-5 advantage.
Trailing by double digits, CSUN showed fight in the bottom of the ninth by batting around in a five-run frame. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with nobody before Moody drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. CSUN again loaded the bases on a Kevin Fitzer walk before Garcia belted a grand slam just fair down the right-field line. Barraza kept the inning alive with another walk but Bohning was retired to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Garcia's grand slam was his first home run of his CSUN career. Fitzer also collected his first career hit in the game, a double, along with his first run as a Matador.
Chad Wilson was a bright spot for the pitching staff as the senior worked three shutout innings in relief with one hit allowed and three strikeouts. Shane Carey made his CSUN debut in the ninth inning on the mound, retiring the only batter he faced.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I truly believe there's a lack of confidence in the game right now from us, that tends to happen at times when you've kind of been beat down. From that Sunday game at Irvine where we gave up the lead, we've been beat down since then. You've got to tip your hat to USC, we played in the same conditions that they did today. They took advantage of it, we didn't. I'll start with the portion of the team that I work with and that's the pitching staff. We're not real good right now, in fact we're not good at all. It's probably lack of confidence, it's the negativity that's gone on the last week-and-a-half. This game is full of adversity, life is full of adversity. sometimes it makes you stronger and sometimes it makes you go the other way. We've got to find out in a hurry which guys will accept the adversity and take it on as a challenge. Right now we are taking jabs to the face and not doing anything about it.
"We've shown that when things go the Matador way, we are a pretty good team. When they don't go the Matador way, we aren't a very good team. That's not a characteristic that's strong for being successful. This is a sport of failure. You have to accept that failure and keep evolving and plugging along to be successful."
