NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Associate head coach Eddie Cornejo has been selected as the successor to Dave Serrano and will be the head baseball coach of the Matadors after the conclusion of the 2022 season.
Â
Cornejo is in his third season on Serrano's coaching staff. He was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2022 campaign after previously serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to the program from 2020-21.
Â
During his time at Northridge, Cornejo has helped the Matadors post a 51-41 overall record. CSUN would go 10-5 in a shortened 2020 season before finishing 21-19 in a conference-only season in 2021. The Matadors finished fourth in the Big West last season, recording its fourth winning conference record since joining the league in 2001.
Â
With the departure of six position players due to graduation and the MLB draft, Cornejo helped revamp a Matador lineup that finished second in the Big West in batting last season. CSUN is currently placed in the top half of the Big West in runs, home runs, slugging percentage and stolen bases in 2022 while the Matadors lead the conference in assists and double plays.
Â
Cornejo has coached at the collegiate level since 2009 and the Division I ranks since 2011.
Â
Cornejo served as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach to Andrew Checketts at UC Santa Barbara from 2012-17. With Cornejo on the staff, the Gauchos had five nationally-ranked recruiting classes. Cornejo was recognized as the top recruiter in the Big West by D1Baseball in 2016.
Â
With the Gauchos, Cornejo helped UC Santa Barbara reach the NCAA Tournament three times, highlighted by the program's first-ever berth in the College World Series in 2016. The Gauchos also won 43 games in 2016, breaking a school Division I record that season.
Â
Cornejo spent the 2019 season as the recruiting coordinator with San Jose State. He also was an assistant coach with UC Riverside in 2011. Cornejo began his coaching career as the associate head coach at Riverside City College before taking over as interim head coach in 2010. At RCC, he guided the recruitment of all 10 sophomores to NCAA and NAIA schools.Â
Â
Before venturing into coaching, Cornejo was an All-American shortstop at Riverside City College, helping the Tigers win two consecutive state titles in 2000 and 2001. He would transfer to the University of Oklahoma and play for the Sooners for two seasons. He earned All-Midwest Region and All-Big 12 Conference honors as a second baseman in 2003 with Oklahoma.
Â
Cornejo was selected in the 13th round of the 2003 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Oakland Athletics. He played six seasons in the A's and the Colorado Rockies' farm systems, advancing as high as the Triple-A ranks in 2008.
