Matador Rally Falls Short Against CSU Bakersfield
4/30/2022 6:12:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (21-18, 10-10 Big West) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth but came up a run short in an 8-7 defeat at the hands of CSU Bakersfield (16-23, 9-8 Big West) on Saturday at Matador Field. Jakob Simons finished 2-for-3 with three RBI while Brandon Bohning had a 3-for-5 effort with an RBI. Bart West also hit a two-run home run, his seventh of the season. Both teams combined to leave 24 runners on base with the Matadors stranding 13.
The Roadrunners jumped in front in the first inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly from AJ Miller. James Bell, who scored on the play, doubled earlier in the inning and would have been thrown out at third base trying to stretch to a triple as a throw from the outfield beat him to the bag, but Bell kicked the ball away from CJ Yogi on a slide, leaving him safe.
CSUN quickly evened the game in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally. Joey Kramer reached base with two outs on a throwing error by Cody Hendriks before Sebastian Garcia walked and Bohning reached on an infield single. Simons forced in a run with a walk, but the Matadors settled for the one run when Andrew Sojka struck out.
Diego Gutierrez shut down the Roadrunner offense in the second and third innings, but CSUB pulled in front again in the fourth. After walking two batters and surrendering a single to load the bases, Blake Sodersten relieved Gutierrez and would give up a two-run single to Bell.
The Matadors though stormed in front in the middle innings. In the fourth, Simons cut the deficit to 3-2 on a one-out RBI double to center field. An inning later, West came away with a one-out two-run homer to left field, putting the Matadors in front 4-3. CSUN though were turned away from a huge fifth inning when Ryan Verdugo retired Sojka with the bases loaded.
Bakersfield continued to apply pressure on Matador pitching, pushing across three runs in the sixth. Bell added to his hit total with an RBI single before Miller gave CSUB the lead on a two-run homer to left. The lead swelled to 8-4 in the top of the eighth on RBI hits from Bell and Angel Saldivar.
In similar fashion to yesterday's game when the Matadors rallied for three runs over the final two innings in a comeback win, CSUN battled back late on Saturday. Kai Moody trimmed the deficit to 8-5 with a two-out RBI single, scoring Sojka from third base. Gabe Gonzalez kept the inning alive with a single, bringing West to the plate as the tying run. With the count at 3-1, West hit a deep drive to left field that sailed over the fence but the ball went foul. A pitch later, West was retired on a popout.
CSUN mounted one last rally in the bottom of the ninth, eventually bringing the possible winning run to the plate. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Bohning and Simons brought CSUN to within 8-7 with one out. However, CSUN's comeback would fall a run short on Saturday. Sojka would fly out to left-center field for the second out before pinch-hitter Ali Camarillo grounded out to second base for the final out of the game.
GAME NOTES
Sojka extended his on-base streak to 22 games with a double in the eighth inning. Moody picked up his 15th multiple-hit game of the season, bringing him one short of Sojka for the team lead. West also recorded his seventh multiple-RBI game, tying Gonzalez for the team lead.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Isaac Ontiveros and sophomore right-handed pitcher Shane Carey combined to toss the final two innings on Saturday with no runs allowed.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Bakersfield did a lot more right than we did. I have a lot of respect for them, they got left on the field last night. I think all but one inning in this series, they've outplayed us. They've out-pitched us and probably out-hit us all weekend. You've got to tip your hat to them. Today we didn't come out with a very good approach. We misplayed a line drive early on in the outfield then we had an out at third that would have ended the inning when we dropped the ball. That kind of set the tone. We gave up too much from the mound. Besides Wilson's stint last night late in the game, I don't think we've pitched as well as we have pitched lately. And I think their approach offensively has been better than ours. We've given up more at-bats. The home run by Miller, his second one of the series, was hit to the opposite field. Their approach is better than ours so we've got to fix that. We have an opportunity to win this series tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a big attitude day for us."
