Matadors Lose Slugfest to UCSB, 13-10
4/8/2022 7:12:00 PM | Baseball
CSUN jumped in front early in the first inning on a two-out RBI double from Gonzalez that plated Andrew Sojka. The Matadors would double their lead in the second inning on a line drive home run from Joey Kramer.
Blaine Traxel got off to a solid start for CSUN on the mound by tossing two scoreless innings to begin the game. However, the Gauchos broke through in the third inning to even the game. Two of the first three batters reached in the third before Bryce Willts belted a two-run double in left-center field. Traxel would limit the damage in the inning by retiring the next two batters.
CSUN again leaned on the long ball in the home half of the third to reclaim the lead. After Jakob Simons singled and Sojka drew a walk, Gonzalez hammered a three-run home run over the center-field wall to give CSUN a 5-2 lead.
The Gauchos got a run back in the fourth courtesy of a Jordan Sprinkle RBI single but the Matadors responded for two runs of their own in the home half of the frame. In the inning, CSUN loaded the bases for Sojka who drove in a run with a single. Kai Moody followed with an RBI single as well to extend to a 7-3 lead.
Traxel appeared he would blank the Gauchos in the fifth inning after retiring two of the first three batters. However, Christian Kirtley belted a two-run home run to cut the CSUN lead to 7-5.
CSUN again responded in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Brandon Bohning that made it an 8-5 game. The Matadors though could not hold off the Gauchos over the final four innings. In the sixth, UCSB struck for a two-run home run off the bat of Willits with two outs. An inning later, the Gauchos drew even on a solo homer from Broc Mortenson.
The Gauchos flexed their muscles once more in the eighth. With runners at first and second base, Willits stepped to the plate and delivered a three-run home run. Mortenson capped a four-run eighth with an RBI that put the Gauchos on top 12-8.
Trailing by four, the Matadors would rally in the bottom of the eighth after Simons doubled Sojka singled to put runners at the corners. A wild pitch brought home CSUN's ninth run but Sojka was thrown out trying to take third base on the play. CSUN eventually got the tying run to the plate with two outs but Matt Ager struck out Bart West to end the inning.
UCSB added an insurance run in the top of the ninth before the Matadors put forth one last rally. A pair of two-out doubles from Bohning and Luke Powell cut the deficit to 13-10. With the tying run on deck, Simons battled to a 3-2 count before flying out to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Sojka finished 3-for-3 with two runs, two walks and an RBI while Bohning went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Kramer and Simons also had two hits apiece. Traxel finished with five innings pitched with five strikeouts and five runs allowed. With an error surrendered in the third, the Matadors had their 41-inning errorless streak snapped.
For UCSB, Willits had two home runs, four hits and seven RBI.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"A typical day here when it's hot and the wind is blowing out. I commended our team. The energy level has maintained the same, these guys have a will to win. We wore down one of the better Friday pitchers in this league in [Cory] Lewis. Probably got him out of the game earlier than he's got out all year. I commend the offense. We just have to do a better job of understanding how to win at our ballpark. Some of the late inning stuff that they did was when we fell behind in the count. You can't do that here. Offenses get confident when the wind is blowing. It's an offensive ballpark. They get even more confident when we get behind in the count and you've got to give them something to hit. I think that was the difference. They walked a lot of guys, I know we didn't walk as many guys but we gave them a lot of count leverage. We've got to get some things fixed out of the bullpen. What I know, it's doesn't look like there's a lot of confidence coming in. We've got to have short memory, it's about your next outing."
