UCSB leads CSUN in the all-time series 91-69-3 with the Gauchos winning seven of the last nine overall. Last season, UCSB won three of four games from CSUN in Santa Barbara as the Matadors took the series finale 7-3. The last two series have gone the Gauchos' way after CSUN had won back-to-back series from 2017 to 2018.
CSUN won its second-straight conference series last weekend, defeating UC Irvine in two of three games on the road. It would be a back-and-forth series that would be decided in the final inning in each game. The Matadors won a 14-inning marathon in the opener 7-5 as Drew Porter drove in the go-ahead run in the 14th inning. CSUN would take game two 8-6 in 12 innings, storming back from a five-run deficit in the eighth before Nathan Barraza hit a go-ahead two-run single in extras. The Matadors came two outs short of a series sweep but the Anteaters rallied for three in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 win. The series win over the Anteaters was the Matadors' first since 2017.
Andrew Sojka scored the winning run in the first two games of the series as he batted .500 (8-of-16) with six runs and four RBI in the three games. Gabe Gonzalez and Bart West collected home runs in the series. On the pitching side, Blake Schriever received the win in the opener after tossing four innings in relief with one run allowed while Chad Wilson hurled two shutout innings in relief for a win in game two. Although not figuring into a decision, Lucas Braun and Diego Gutierrez tossed a combined eight shutout innings out of the bullpen in the series.
As a team, the Matadors rank second in the Big West in home runs (27) heading into the weekend while they are third in runs (163) and stolen bases (32). Gonzalez is first in the league in home runs (8) and third in RBI (23) and slugging percentage (.625). Kai Moody is tied with Sojka for second place in the conference in runs (25) while West is in fourth place in batting average (.350). On the mound, Schriever is second in the conference in saves (5). Blake Sodersten and Blaine Traxel are tied for fifth place in wins (3).
In the CSUN record book, Schriever is currently tied with Joe Rocchio (2004-07) for third place on the Matadors' career games pitched list at 85. Schriever, who has 20 career saves, also needs nine more saves to catch Conner O'Neil (2015-17) for the top mark in Matador history. Sodersten is tied with four players for sixth place on the career games started list at 35, and can move into a fifth place tie with Jim Walker (1983-84) with one more start.
