NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN women's golf team is set to open the 2022 conference championship Sunday in San Luis Obispo. Nine teams will play 54 holes over three days (Apr. 10-12) in a battle for the conference crown.
The three-day championship tournament will be contested at San Luis Obispo Country Club which will play at a par-72, 6,235 yard layout for the conference championship. The Matadors are seeded eighth in the championship and will be paired with UC Davis and CSU Bakersfield for Sunday's opening round.
Interim head coach Michelle Winkler's five-player lineup will consist of Fernanda Sosa, Julia Myklebust, Elle Laur, Julia Johansson and Hanne Sofie Borgen. Johnasson and Borgen are the two players in the CSUN lineup to have previously played in a Big West Championship. Johansson finished 16th at five-over 221 (76-69-76) at the 2021 conference championship at Yorba Linda Country Club. Also in her first conference championship event last year, Borgen finished 41st at (+31) 247 following rounds of 80-80-87 for the Matadors who finished eighth as a team at (+64) 928.
Johansson comes into the championship with a team-leading 77.95 scoring average in 20 rounds. Sosa ranks second at 78.23 over 26 rounds which includes three top-10 finishes and one top-20 showing. Myklebust carries a 78.50 scoring average into the championship followed by Laur at 80.41 and Borgen at 80.80.Â
CSUN, which took home Big West Championships in both 2003 and 2004, is looking to replicate or better its team finish from 2019 when the Matadors finished second to Long Beach State. CSUN also finished as championship runner-up to UC Davis in 2014.
Â
Brianna Steger had CSUN's best finish in recent years, finishing as individual runner-up in 2019 after posting rounds of 69-71-77 to finish at (+1) 217 at Moorpark Country Club. The Matadors have had three players win or tie for the individual championship, Beth Allen in 2003 and 2004 and Clariss Guce in 2014.
The Big West Conference champion and top individual automatically qualify for one of four NCAA regionals. The 2021 NCAA Women's Golf Championship will be held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. on May 20-25.
