SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Fernanda Sosa fired an opening round 76 and is in the individual top-10 and the CSUN Women's Golf is sixth after the opening round of the 2022 Big West Women's Golf Championship Sunday at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
With Sosa in the top-10 and four CSUN players in the top-25, the Matadors opened with a team round of (+22) 310 and are sixth in the nine-team field. CSUN heads into Monday's second round just five shots out of the top-five and 13 strokes back of team-leading Hawai'i (297). Cal Poly (298) is currently second, UC Riverside (302) is third, Long Beach State (305) and Cal State Fullerton (305) are tied for fourth, UC Irvine (318) and UC Davis (318) are tied for seventh and CSU Bakersfield (333) is ninth.
Sosa opened day one with five straight pars before consecutive bogeys dropped her to two-over after seven holes. A birdie and No. 8 and a par at No. 9 sent her to the back nine at one-over. She remained at one-over after a par at No. 11 before bogeys on three of her next four holes dropped her to four-over. Sosa would close with a birdie, par and bogey over her final three holes to finish the day tied for 10th at four-over 76.

COACH MICHELLE WINKLER SAID
"We were playing relatively well after the front nine. The wind picked up on the back, which really affected our approach shots and ability to hit greens. Sadly we just didn't get up and down enough and struggled on the greens. After a long practice session on the greens after the round, our hope is to regain our focus and strategy and make more birdies tomorrow."
The Matadors will be paired with Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State for the second round which gets underway Monday morning at 8:20 a.m.Â
