Matadors Down San Diego State 9-2, Serrano Earns 500th Career Win
5/4/2022 9:44:00 PM | Baseball
SAN DIEGO, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (23-19) scored six times over the first two innings en route to a 9-2 victory over San Diego State (14-33) on Tuesday at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Kevin Fitzer had two hits and drove in four runs while Kai Moody finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI. Blake Sodersten was credited with the win after tossing four innings and striking out seven batters. With the win, Dave Serrano collected his 500th career head coaching victory.
Â
CSUN jumped on San Diego State in the opening half-inning. After Andrew Sojka began the game with a walk and Moody singled, Fitzer drove in both runs on a double down the left-field line.
Â
The Matadors added to their lead with a big four-run second inning. CSUN loaded the bases on a walk and two singles before an error on a Moody grounder up the middle brought in the Matadors' third run. Fitzer would collect his third RBI in two innings with a walk and Bart West picked up an RBI single to increase the lead further. CSUN collected its sixth run of the night on a wild pitch with Nathan Barraza at the plate that scored Moody.
Â
Fitzer added to the lead with his fourth RBI in the top of the fifth with a grounder to first that scored Ali Camarillo.
CSUN used five pitchers on the night starting with Gavin Lizik who threw two scoreless innings. Sodersten took over in the third inning and would shake off a solo home run in the frame from Irvin Weems to toss four solid innings. Sodersten retired the side in order in two of his four innings including a strong sixth where he struck out the side.
The combination of Elias Jauregui, Xavier Martinez and Blake Schriever pitched the final three innings for the Matadors. A native of San Diego, Martinez would strike out three batters in a scoreless eighth inning.
San Diego State committed five errors on the night including two in the sixth that resulted in two more CSUN runs. In the frame, Barraza reached on a fielding error with two outs before Drew Porter singled. A failed pickoff attempt by first baseman Brian Leonhardt allowed Barraza to score from third base. CSUN increased its lead to 9-1 on a wild pitch on a Sebastian Garcia walk.Â
Â
GAME NOTES
Matador pitching combined to rack up 15 strikeouts with no walks allowed. Sodersten collected his team-high fifth win of the season and 12th overall of his CSUN career.
Sojka extended his on-base streak to 25 games on Wednesday. He would reach base three times and score two runs. Camarillo finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"A lot of good performances. I think [Sodersten] after he got settled into his first inning, his last three innings were dominant. He was pitching with three different pitches. He was executing good pitches. Xavier Martinez in the eighth though comes in with electric stuff. As a freshman, he's home in San Diego, I've seen this before, he had a lot of people in the stands and I thought he was going to be a little bit anxious. They led it off with a bloop ball that falls in, which ends up being a double, but then he just lit it up after that. I also thought there were some good contributions from the offense. We played some different guys tonight to give them some opportunities. They are working hard but just not getting their names called a lot. It really brought energy to the lineup, which was good to see. Last night wasn't a very good night for us, but to come all the way down here to play like we did, it's a tip of the hat to our team.
"What it means to be me get [500 wins] is I've done it a long time. What it means to me, it reminds me of all of the coaches, support staff and players that have been a part of my career and that have helped me to have that kind of success. I'm very appreciate of that. No man or one person can do anything by themself. It's a contribution of a lot of people over many years that have allowed me to reach that milestone. I won't deny, that I'm excited that I was able to accomplish it with this group, and I'll never forget that moment."
