NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---A header in the 71st minute was the difference in CSUN's 1-0 loss to Loyola Marymount in the 2022 home opener on Sunday at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors outshot the Lions 10-5 in the match and held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Taylor Thames recorded one save in the match.
It would be a defensive struggle through most of the first half. LMU registered the first shot of the contest in the fifth minute courtesy of Madison Werner that Thames stopped. CSUN later saw a pair of opportunities near the box as Angelica Claiborne missed high and Ashley Cruz put a shot on frame.
The Matadors would eventually collect five shots in the opening stanza, but each attempt was thwarted by the LMU defense. CSUN earned a corner kick in the 22nd minute, which led to a shot attempt from Izabel Reyes that missed the crossbar. Cindy Arteaga later had a look at the net from inside the 18-yard line, but LMU goalkeeper Amanda Delgado was there to make a two-handed save.Â
CSUN's defense also stood tall in the first half, limiting the Lions to only two shots, one of which over the final 40-plus minutes. LMU would hit the back of the net in the 38th minute on a drive up the field, but the goal was called off after the Lions were whistled for offside.
In the early minutes of the second half, LMU came out quickly with a shot attempt from Madison Thomas before Kacie Garrity missed wide left in the 51st minute.
LMU finally would break through in the 71st minute off a set piece. Gabriella Marchal deposited a pass from the right corner into a scrum inside the CSUN box. Jennessa Groves would emerge from the crowd with a header that bounced into the goal.Â
CSUN frantically looked for the equalizer in the final 18-plus minutes, but the Lions held on in the final stages of the contest. Cruz again would have her shot saved by Delgado in the 76th minute while Arteaga had two shots down the stretch that missed the netting. CSUN also had a late look in the final minutes when Garrity traveled down the left wing and crossed the ball into the box, but Cailey Jackson could not put a touch on the ball from eight yards out.
GAME NOTES
Cindy Arteaga led all Matadors with four shots, two of which on goal while Ashley Cruz has two shots on goal of her own. Gabriela Robles played the full 90 minutes on the backline for the Matadors.
In addition to leading in shots in the contest, CSUN also posted a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. A total of 23 fouls were committed in the contest with CSUN whistled for 15 of them. CSUN's Angelica Claiborne and the team bench were each shown a yellow card.
