Matadors Hit the Road for Matches with Utah Valley, #6 BYU

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer returns to the road once more for week three of the soccer season. The Matadors visit Utah Valley on Thursday at 6 p.m. before squaring off with No. 6 BYU on Saturday at 7 p.m. Thursday's match will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Saturday's contest will be air on BYUtv.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN dropped a pair of matches last week to fall to 1-3 on the season. The Matadors would fall by a 6-0 margin at UCLA last Thursday before losing a 1-0 decision to Loyola Marymount in their home opener on Sunday.
The Matadors' loss to UCLA was the team's second loss to a ranked team this season. Despite the 6-0 score, Thursday's match at UCLA would be historic as CSUN goalkeeper Taylor Thames tied a school record with 16 saves.
On Sunday, CSUN played LMU in a tight scoreless tie for most of the match until the Lions broke through in the 71st minute with the go-ahead goal. The Matadors would end up outshooting LMU 10-5 on the day, but could not come up with the equalizer down the stretch.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Fresh off a CSUN-record 16 saves, Taylor Thames now leads The Big West in total saves with 30. Thames also ranks ninth in the conference in save percentage (.652). Elsewhere in The Big West, Cindy Arteaga is tied for sixth in shots (9) and third in shots on goal (5).
A total of 14 Matadors have made their debuts with the program already this season with 12 of those players being freshmen. Of the newcomers, freshman Sami Kolin has earned the most minutes on the field with 180 played on the backline. Freshman Stevie Reynolds has started the most times amongst the new crop with three starts.
Defender Erin Anderson made her season debut this past week, playing 45 minutes in CSUN's two games. Anderson appeared in 19 of 20 matches in her first season at CSUN in 2021, recording a goal and an assist.
SERIES HISTORY
The Matadors will face Utah Valley for the third time in team history on Thursday. CSUN has won both matches in the series with the last victory coming in 2017 by a 2-1 decision. In that win, Marissa Favela hit a golden goal in the 92nd minute to propel the Matadors to victory. CSUN prevailed by the same 2-1 score in double overtime in the teams' first meeting in Orem, Utah in 2004.
BYU leads CSUN 3-0 in the all-time series but the teams have not met since the 2002 season. The Cougars won the teams' last match by a 2-1 score. CSUN has made two trips ever to Provo, Utah in its history with the first being in 1995.
HOME GAMES ON THE HORIZON
After this week's two road matches, the Matadors will open a home friendly portion of their schedule next week. Starting with CSUN's home match against USC on Sept. 8, the Matadors will play seven of nine matches at the friendly confines of Matador Soccer Field. During that stretch, the Matadors also host UC Irvine and Portland State in non-conference games before playing Cal State Fullerton in their home conference opener on Sept. 22.
CSUN began the 2022 season by playing its first three on the road, two of which at nationally-ranked foes in Pepperdine and UCLA. After this week, the Matadors would have played five of their first six games away from home.
SCOUTING UTAH VALLEY
The Wolverines have gone 1-0-2 in the early going this season. In last week's action, Utah Valley posted a 2-0 victory over Colorado College before earning a scoreless draw against nationally-ranked UCF. A season ago, UVU went 13-7-2 and finished as runners up at the WAC Tournament. The Wolverines were selected to finish second in the WAC this season. Head coach Chris Lemay is in his sixth season as head coach of the program.
Four members of the Wolverines were placed on the Preseason All-WAC Team, which include Jenna Shepherd, Julianna Carter, Heather Stainbrook and Sydney Bushman. Shepherd was also named Preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year. The trio of Carther, Stainbrook and Bushman have scored goals this season. In goal, Idalia Serrano has allowed one goal in three starts.
SCOUTING BYU
The Cougars have posted a 2-0-1 record this season. BYU defeated No. 20 Ohio State 2-0 last Friday before playing No. 25 Colorado to a 2-2 tie this past Monday. The team also knocked off Cal State Fullerton 1-0 in its season opener. The Cougars finished 2021 with a 17-5-2 record and advanced to the College Cup championship match before losing in penalty kicks to Florida State. BYU was picked to win the WCC this season. Head coach Jennifer Rockwood is in her 28th season leading the Cougars.
A Preseason All-WCC selection, Jamie Shepherd has three of the team's five goals on the season while Bella Folino and Olivia Wade have a goal apiece. Shepherd also has an assist for a team-high seven points. The tandem of Olivia Smith and Lava Vaka also earned a sport on the preseason all-conference team. In goal, Savanna Mason has seen every minute and has allowed two goals on the year.
