CSUN Falls to CSUB in Big West Opener
9/15/2022 9:46:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer surrendered three second-half goals in a 3-1 defeat to CSU Bakersfield in the Big West opener on Thursday at the Main Soccer Field. Cindy Arteaga notched her fourth goal of the season while freshman Hayden Mauldin racked up five saves in front of the net.
CSUN (1-8, 0-1 Big West) came out quickly and applied the pressure on the Roadrunners' defense. After attacks from Arteaga and Cassidy Imperial-Pham, CSUN would break through in the 11th minute of play. The Matadors played along the top of the Roadrunners' box when Angelica Claiborne passed the ball to her left. Imperial-Pham directed the ball toward the top of the box to Cindy Arteaga who made a turn to get past her defender before finding the corner of the net from 18 yards.
Â
Mauldin was credited with one save in the first 45 minutes, but she was active throughout the period. In addition to withstanding five CSUB corner kicks, Mauldin snuffed out several potential scoring threats by breaking up plays and intercepting would be dangerous passes into the goalie box.
Â
The Matadors earned their first corner kick in the 47th minute and nearly came away with a goal. Ashly Torres' kick from the left side bounced in the box to Gabriela Robles who sent a shot that went just wide of the left corner post.
After CSUN controlled the pace for over a half, CSUB turned the tables the rest of the way. The Roadrunners almost tied the match in the 55th minute when a Regielly Halldorsdottir shot hit the cross bar. Seconds later, a costly CSUN handball in its own box, gave the Roadrunners a chance for the equalizer via a penalty kick. Jette Zimmer would hit the center of the goal to even the game at 1-1 in the 55th minute.
Â
Arteaga looked to give the Matadors the lead moments later when she earned a free kick. However, her low shot was kicked away by goalkeeper Hollee Hercik.
Â
Over a 13-minute stretch, the Roadrunners peppered the Matador defense with nine shot attempts and four corner kicks. Kalea Eichenberger would have a clear look at the goal in the 61st minute when she received a pass in front of an open net after Mauldin was forced off her line. Eichenberger though struck the crossbar, keeping the game tied.
Â
Maldin made two saves in the 70th minute, one of which a diving stop to her left. However, CSUB finally broke through on a corner kick in the 72nd minute. Zimmer sent a kick from the left side toward the back post where an open Anela Nigito headed the ball into the net.
CSUB later put the game out of reach with another strike in the 83rd minute. From the right wing, Eichenberger sent the ball deep into the box where a CSUN defender directed the ball into the Matador net.
Â
