NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Cindy Arteaga recorded her first career brace in a CSUN (2-8) 2-0 win over Portland State on Sunday at Matador Soccer Field. Freshman Hayden Mauldin notched six saves en route to her first career shutout.
CSUN finished outshooting Portland State 11-9 on the afternoon including 6-4 in a back-and-forth first half.
Neither side could produce a goal for nearly the full 45 minutes in the opening stanza. Mauldin picked up her first save of the day in the third minute off the foot of Sienna Higinbotham. Minutes later, Ashley Cruz almost came away with a CSUN goal when she made a deep run toward the net before goalkeeper Enya Hernandez snuffed the attempt on a dive.
Three of CSUN's six first-half shots were on goal, but its last attempt of the period would finally break the scoreless tie. In the 45th minute, the Matadors played the ball at midfield where Izabel Reyes made a short pass to Kacie Garrity near the sideline. Garrity then deposited a long pass up through the middle of the field where a streaking Arteaga got in front of her defender. Arteaga's drive forced Hernandez off her line before the Matador forward finished the play with a rolling shot that found the empty net.
In the second half, the Vikings looked for the equalizer early as Hoffman had another shot saved by Mauldin in the 49th minute. CSUN would control the pace for the most of the half though, limiting Portland State to a single shot for nearly 30 minutes after intermission.
Liv Frazier and Hoffman each missed wide after the 75th minute before Mauldin made two quality saves in front of the left post near the 83-minute mark. Mauldin would stop a deep attempt from Hoffman before knocking a short rebound attempt from Raniyah Burton out of bounds.
Moments later, the Matadors went back on the attack and looked to put the game out of reach. With less than six minutes to play, the Matadors drove up the field as Cassidy Imperial-Pham kicked the ball to her right where Stevie Reynolds was streaking up the field. Reynolds then passed ahead to Arteaga who sent a laser into the right corner of the netting from inside the right side of the box.
Arteaga nearly came away with the hat trick in the 88th minute, but her shot was saved by Sidney O'billovich.
GAME NOTES
Cindy Arteaga had five of CSUN's 11 shots with three on goal while Ashley Cruz has two shots. CSUN and Portland State had three corner kicks apiece while 24 fouls were called in the match with CSUN whistled for 13 of them. The Matadors' Arteaga and Izabel Reyes along with Portland State's Kalo Iongi were shown yellow cards.
Arteaga's brace was CSUN's first since 2019 when Alexis White accomplished the feat against UC Riverside. On the season, Arteaga has scored six goals and four times over the last three matches.
Angelica Claiborne, Gabriela Robles, Ashly Torres, Brooke Mobeck and Kacie Garrity played the full 90 minutes in the match. CSUN earned its first shutout of the 2022 season.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"It was definitely a complete 90 minutes, the first we've had this season. We were very excited and proud that they were able to piece that together. I think the prep was focusing on the little things and being disciplined, and making that next pass. We introduced a new formation and they did really well in the execution.
Cindy is finding her rhythm. It was only a matter of time for her, we knew it was coming. I wish it would have come a couple weeks ago, but she's the fun player to watch. She's so dangerous and I'm really happy she's figuring it out.
We're going to dissect film and prepare the group as best as humanly possible [for next week's games]. It will be a combination of exploiting our opponent's weaknesses and making sure we are capitalizing on our strengths."
