NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Redshirt senior Dylan Gonzalez scored his first career goal as CSUN played Saint Mary's to a 1-1 tie in men's soccer action Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field.
Wade Muttitt recorded the first offensive threat for the Gaels as he posted back-to-back shots in the 16th minute that were turned away by Cooper Wenzel. Wenzel stayed busy, saving Christian Engmann's attempt in the 18th. With both offenses confined over the final 25+ minutes, the match remained scoreless heading into halftime.
Enrique Pineda charted a pair of shots in the 51st minute that were saved by Saint Mary's keeper Jack Landreth. Both goals made a save during the next 15 minutes before Gonzalez broke through at 72:07. Jamar Ricketts passed the ball to Oscar Cardenas. Cardenas sent the ball to Gonzalez who shot from the right into the low left of the Saint Mary's net for the goal.
The Gaels were awarded three corner kicks in the following three minutes which resulted in only one shot attempt. Saint Mary's tied the match with 5:23 remaining. Jack Vestberg sent the ball towards the CSUN net where it bounced off two Matador defenders in front to Bastian Toelhoej who scored. Wenzel made two saves in the final four minutes to keep the score knotted at one, resulting in the second tie of the year for CSUN, and the first for Saint Mary's (5-2-1).
THE STATS
Saint Mary's outshot CSUN 12-8, 8-5 on goal. Wenzel made a career-high seven saves for the Matadors. Landreth made four saves for the Gaels. Saint Mary's posted eight corner kicks while CSUN posted two. The Gaels held a 55-45 advantage in possession.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
"We took a step backward at Missouri State, they beat us in all the physical phases including those that allow you to do the little things to win games. We focused on that this week. We weren't as sharp as we wanted to be offensively, which allowed Saint Mary's to continue to attack us at times. They put a lot of pressure on you with their throw-ins and corner kicks, as a result, you are always on your heels. From a standpoint of winning soccer, they are a great ball club. We could have won 1-0, we could have lost 1-0, but we ended up tied 1-1. Am I disappointed? You always want to win."
NOTES
Wednesday was the 10th all-time meeting between the CSUN and Saint Mary's with the Matadors now leading the all-time series 5-4-1…Gonzalez's goal was the first for CSUN in 220:40, dating back to Jack Rhead's game winner at UNLV on Sept. 4.
