9/25/2022 3:34:00 PM | Women's Soccer
DAVIS, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-9-1, 0-2-1 Big West) received the first career goal from freshman Cassidy Imperial-Pham in a 1-1 draw at UC Davis (3-4-4, 0-1-2 Big West) on Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field. The Matadors yielded a second-half goal to the Aggies, but held on for the draw the rest of the way. Freshman goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin had five saves.
CSUN took advantage of its first shot of attempt in the 13th minute of play. Off a free kick, Gabriela Robles sent the ball toward the left corner of the box where Angelica Claiborne was able to get a touch on the ball. An Aggie defender deflected the ball toward the sideline to Ashley Cruz who sent a cross to the middle of the box. There, Imperial-Pham was able to re-direct the pass with a header into the net for a CSUN 1-0 lead.
UC Davis nearly squared the match in the 22nd minute as Sammie Rueles put a header nearly on frame following a free kick. Minutes later, Arteaga was just off the mark on a header of her own in the 28th minute. Late in the first half, CSUN had an opportunity to push its lead to two goals when Arteaga was fouled inside the Aggies' box. Arteaga took the penalty shot, but missed wide of the left post, keeping the score at 1-0. UC Davis put the ball in the back of the net in the 43rd minute, but the goal was called off after an offside whistle.
Shot attempts remained fairly even in the first half with UC Davis holding a tight 5-4 edge while both teams had one shot on goal apiece.
After intermission, CSUN had the first two shot attempts including a deep shot from Jackie Victorio that was saved. Arteaga would again find room in the box on a cross from Cruz in the 60th minute, however, Arteaga's shot went high of the net from 12 yards.
The Matadors led until the 64th minute when the Aggies finally broke through with the equalizer. Playing the ball up the left sideline, Kylee Redman found a streaking Genavieve Fontes on the left side of the net. Mauldin attempted to break up the play, but Fontes was able to tap the ball ahead into an open net.
Over the final 20-plus minutes, the Matadors withstood a barrage of UC Davis strikes. Mauldin posted four saves in the second stanza including a stop off the foot of Teresa Garcia in the 72nd minute. On that play, Redman picked up the rebound, but missed wide right of the net.
In the 77th minute, Francesca Van Norden had an opportunity to put the Aggies ahead on a header via a corner kick, however, the shot was high. Chandler Connors would have her shot attempt saved by Mauldin three minutes later.
Cami Alarcon took the Matadors' last shot of the afternoon in the 81st minute from 20 yards, but Caeley Goldstein made a save from her knees.
CSUN committed a foul with less than two minutes to play, setting up one last look for UC Davis. On the free kick, several players got a touch on the ball inside the box before Rueles got possession and took a shot, but Mauldin made a two-handed save.
