CSUN Takes on USC and UC Irvine at Matador Soccer Field

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer returns to Matador Soccer Field this week for a pair of matches. The Matadors host USC on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. before facing UC Irvine in a non-conference match on Sunday at 5 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call.
CSUN will host a Soccer Fan Fest in conjunction with the men's and women's soccer doubleheader on Thursday. The Fan Fest will start at 6 p.m. in Parking Lot F-5 as the Matadors' men's soccer team hosts Utah Valley at 5 p.m. to start the doubleheader. In addition to music, games and prizes, the first 100 CSUN students in attendance will receive free pizza and a t-shirt.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors dropped a pair of matches last week on the road in Utah. CSUN fell by a 3-1 decision to Utah Valley last Thursday before suffering a 5-0 setback at sixth-ranked BYU on Saturday.
CSUN would surrender three first-half goals to Utah Valley, but broke up the shutout with a goal from Cindy Arteaga in the 73rd minute. The Matadors' held the Wolverines without a goal in the second half as goalkeeper Taylor Thames recorded 12 saves on the night.
On Saturday, the Matadors played BYU to a scoreless tie until the 44th minute when the Cougars hit the back of the net. It was all BYU in the second half with the home team scoring four more times to break the game open. Arteaga recorded the Matadors' only shot of the match late in the contest.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Cindy Arteaga tallied her team-high second goal of the season, which puts her in a fourth-place tie on The Big West's goal leaderboard. Arteaga is also ranked second in the league in shots (15), third in shots on goal (7) and ninth in points (4). Assisting Arteaga on the goal at Utah Valley, Ashley Cruz and Kacie Garrity each recorded their respective first assists of the campaign.
Freshman goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin made her collegiate debut on Saturday against BYU. Mauldin was forced her to miss the team's first five matches of the season due to injury. The true freshman recorded three saves on the night.
With Mauldin's debut on Saturday, a total of 15 newcomers have already played at least one match for CSUN this season. Of those 15 newcomers, 13 are freshmen including 12 true freshmen.
SERIES HISTORY
USC leads CSUN in the all-time series 5-0-1. The Trojans prevailed by a 4-0 score last season against the Matadors at Soni McAlister Field. CSUN only trailed 1-0 in the match until the 70th minute, but USC scored three times within a six-minute span to break the match open. The Matadors have not hosted USC since the 2012 season when the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN has hosted USC only twice in team history.
CSUN holds an 11-10-4 edge in the all-time series with UC Irvine. The teams met twice last season with the Anteaters winning both games. UCI defeated CSUN in Irvine by a 2-1 score before knocking off the Matadors in Northridge, 6-1. Prior to last season, CSUN had won four of five from UCI and three-straight decisions at home.
SCOUTING USC
The Trojans (2-1) have won two-straight matches after defeating then sixth-ranked TCU 3-0 last Thursday. USC's other victory this season came on Aug. 21 in a 1-0 victory over Long Beach State. A season ago, USC advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and posted a 14-3-3 overall record. After finishing second in the Pac-12 last season, USC was picked to finish in fourth place this season by the conference's head coaches. Jane Alukonis is in her first season as head coach.
A MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2021, Croix Bethune has a team-high two goals, two assists and six points this season. In 2021, Bethune had 16 goals and 42 points en route to earning first-team All-America honors. Aaliyah Farmer and Simone Jackson have USC's other two goals on the year. In goal, Anna Smith has recorded two saves and two shutouts.
SCOUTING UC IRVINE
The Anteaters defeated Nicholls (5-1) and San Jose State (3-0) last week to improve to 3-1-1 this season. UCI also has a victory over California earlier in the year. The Anteaters went 16-6 last season, winning The Big West before upsetting UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The team was picked to win The Big West again this season by the conference's coaches. Head coach Scott Juniper is in his 15th season leading the UCI program.
Destinee Manzo has a team-best three goals and seven points on the year while Desiree Mendoza has two goals and five points. Five other Anteaters have also hit the back of the net. Glo Hinojosa has three shutouts and 10 saves in 450 minutes in front of the net.
