Utah Valley Hands CSUN Its First Defeat

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Utah Valley scored twice in the second half as the Wolverines defeated CSUN 2-0 in men's soccer action Thursday night at Matador Soccer Field.
Both teams took two shots in the first half. The lone attempt that went on goal was a Jamar Ricketts shot in the 10th minute that was saved by Jason Smith. Smith turned away a pair of Marley Edwards in the first 11 minutes of the second. Utah Valley mounted an offensive attack in the 63rd minute. Ura Miura's shot was saved by Cooper Wenzel, but the rebound came back out in front to Mark Andros who converted the chance for the opening goal.
A little over four minutes later, Kendi Bellini stole the ball away from a CSUN defender inside the Matador goalie box. He took two dribbles and scored from in front for a 2-0 advantage. CSUN was awarded back-to-back corner kicks in the 71st but were turned away. The final Matador offensive fury came with just under five minutes remaining. Matthieu Mayindu went off the goalpost. His rebound came out to Enrique Pineda. Pineda's shot hit the crossbar and came out to Ricketts. Ricketts' attempt was saved by Smith in front.

CSUN outshot Utah Valley (2-1-1) 13-7, as both teams put five shots on goal. Smith made five saves. Wenzel charted three saves. Both squads posted four corner kicks.

"We had a span where we could have taken control of the game, but we couldn't capitalize on the chances. Hats off to UVU, they were able to take advantage of ours and giving us our first defeat."
"We adjusted well in the second half and gave ourselves enough opportunities to win the game, but we just couldn't put them in. That's soccer, those who don't score watch the other team score."

As the heat wave continued in Southern California, the temperature at kickoff was 96 degrees…the teams took a hydration break with 20 minutes remaining in the first half…The Wolverines held a 58-42 possession advantage…Thursday marked the sixth time that the clubs have played men's soccer with Utah Valley now leading the all-time series 3-2-1.
