Matadors Host UC San Diego on Thursday, Visit UC Irvine on Saturday

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (4-16, 1-8 Big West) continues Big West play this week when the Matadors host UC San Diego on Thursday at 7 p.m. inside Premier America Credit Union Arena. The week wraps up on Saturday with a road test at UC Irvine at 6 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister have the call at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN wrapped last week's action with its first Big West win of the season. The Matadors handed Cal State Fullerton, last season's Big West representative in the NCAA Tournament, a 69-66 defeat in overtime on Saturday night. CSUN rallied from a 60-55 deficit late in the contest behind a 3-pointer from De'Sean Allen-Eikens and late free throws from Atin Wright to send the game into the extra session. In OT, CSUN scored the first five points and led throughout the five-minute session. Allen-Eikens made a free throw with two seconds remaining to push the lead to three before the Titans missed a last-second 3-point attempt.
Allen-Eikens scored a season-high 22 points while he made 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Wright chipped in with 18 points in the win. CSUN registered season highs in made 3-point baskets (12) and steals (12) in the contest.
Also in last week's action, the Matadors dropped a 72-52 decision at UC Santa Barbara on Thursday. CSUN kept pace with the Big West-leading Gauchos for most of the contest including taking a lead early in the second half but UCSB went on a 24-6 run and never looked back. Wright poured in 19 points while Dearon Tucker chipped in 10 points in defeat.
MATADOR HEADLINES
De'Sean Allen-Eikens' 22 points against Cal State Fullerton tied a career high in points for the Matador newcomer. Allen-Eikens previously netted 22 in his first collegiate game on Nov. 7, 2019, while playing for the University North Dakota. On the season, Allen-Eikens has reached 20 or more points twice with his other 20-point effort coming at Fresno State on Dec. 7.
Atin Wright surpassed the career 800-point mark in Saturday's win over Fullerton. The 6-1 guard currently stands at 802 points with the Matadors in 70 career games played. Allen-Eikens is nearing the 800-point plateau for his career as well as he has 773 points entering the week.
In The Big West, Wright is 10th in points per game (14.2) while Dionte Bostick is in 15th place (13.1). Wright is also ranked third in the conference in free throw percentage (87.0), fourth in 3-point field goals made per game (2.0) and eighth in steals per game (1.4). Bostick checks in 10th place in the league in steals per game (1.3) and in 11th place in assists per game (2.8). Allen-Eikens is in 14th place in rebounds per game (5.8) and 16th in blocks per game (0.6).
SERIES HISTORY
UC San Diego evened the all-time series with CSUN at 2-2 with a season sweep in 2021-22. UCSD defeated CSUN 72-64 in La Jolla last season before picking up an 83-77 win at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Prior to 2022, CSUN played UCSD in 1977 and in 1980, when the program was a Division II member.
UC Irvine leads CSUN 41-25 in the all-time series. The Anteaters defeated the Matadors 71-57 earlier this month on Jan. 14 for their second-straight win in the series. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the teams have not played at the Bren Events Center since the Matadors won 72-70 on March 4, 2020.
SCOUTING UC SAN DIEGO
The Tritons (7-13, 2-6 Big West) split their two games last week as they defeated Cal Poly 71-64 on the road before falling in triple overtime to Long Beach State 112-110 at home. UCSD has gone 2-2 on the road in league play. The Tritons are currently in eighth place in the Big West standings. Head coach Eric Olen is in his 10th season leading the Tritons.
Bryce Pope is second in The Big West in scoring at 18.9 points per game to go with 3.6 rebounds per game. Other double digit scorers on the team include Roddie Anderson III (12.0) and Francis Nwaokorie (11.0). Nwaokorie is also fifth in the conference in rebounds per game (6.9) followed by Emmanuel Tshimanga in sixth place (6.6). As a team, UCSD averages 67.6 points per game.

After dropping its first league game last Monday to UCSB, UC Irvine (13-6, 6-1 Big West) bounced back with a 76-68 win over Hawai'i on Thursday. The Anteaters are a half-game out of first place entering play on Thursday. UCI has won six of nine games at the Bren Events Center this season. Head coach Russell Turner is in his 13th season leading UCI.
Dawson Baker is eighth in The Big West in scoring at 14.4 points followed DJ Davis in 13th place at 14.0 points. Bent Leuchten is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 points to go with 6.1 rebounds per game. Pierre Crockrell II shares The Big West lead in assists per game (4.7). UCI tops the league in points per game (77.3) and 3-point field goal percentage (38.7).
