10/26/2023 9:23:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer wrapped up the 2023 season by battling to a 0-0 draw with UC Riverside on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Kennedy Williams, in her first career start, had three saves and picked up her first shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In just her third appearance of the season, Kennedy Williams would be tested in the early going in front of the goal. Spenser Gonzales picked up a shot on goal in the second minute while Charisma Benitez missed wide of the frame. UCR picked up a pair of corner kicks over the first 20 minutes but Williams and the Matadors defended the net each time. Yoshi Rubalcava gave CSUN its first shot attempt, which went high, and she also had a shot blocked minutes later. Kacie Garrity and Sami Kolin also registered shots in the first 45-minute session.
Out of intermission, UCR went on the attack once more, generating four early attempts as well as three corner kicks. Williams would stop attempts in the 48th and 55th minutes to help keep the game scoreless. The Highlanders had all seven shot attempts in the second period to go with five corner kicks, but the Matador defense stood tall each time. Sanaa Guyness had UCR's last shot of the night in the 89th minute, which went high.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"In terms of quality, it was probably the best we've moved the ball. Defensively, we were organized. I think they outshot us but that wasn't a reflection of the game. We created some decent opportunities and just failed to pull the trigger. But I'm very happy with how we ended. It was a full game from start to finish. I think this team has come a long way. We would have liked to get the three points, but we'll be happy with not conceding and getting a point out of this."
