NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---After helping lead CSUN Women's Basketball to a 2-0 start to the 2023-24 season, freshman Kaitlyn Elsholz nabbed her first career Big West Player of the Week award, the league office announced on Monday.
Originally from Peoria, Ariz., Elsholz had a breakout first week of her collegiate career. Elsholz averaged a team-high 20.0 points and 3.5 steals to go with 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while coming off the bench in both games.
In her CSUN debut, Elsholz scored 13 of her 18 points in the second half in a 79-64 victory over Utah State on opening night. She promptly made her first two field goal attempts before finishing 7-of-15 from the floor. Elsholz would also add five steals, two assists and two blocks in 26 total minutes.
Elsholz came up big late again in a come-from-behind overtime 81-72 victory over Seattle U on Thursday night. With the Matadors trailing by as many as 18 points, Elsholz led the comeback charge, scoring a game-high 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting. She scored nine points in the fourth quarter, helping an erase an eight-point deficit to start the period. After Kayanna Spriggs hit a game-tying three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, Elsholz took over with seven points in the extra session. She added seven rebounds and two steals in her 32 minutes.
Elsholz is the first Matador in team history to be named the Big West Player of the Week as a freshman in her first week of competition.
The Matadors are off to their first 2-0 start since the 2014-15 season. They will hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday to take on Santa Clara at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
