2/25/2023 4:30:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
REDLANDS, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo battled through snowy conditions to collect two wins at the Redlands Invitational on Saturday at Thompson Aquatic Center. The Matadors defeated the host Bulldogs 9-3 before knocking off Westcliff 13-5. Dorottya Telek netted 10 goals on the day while Shelby Hovaensian added five. Meghan Lopez played all 64 minutes in front of the cage, producing 27 total saves.
GAME 1 RECAP
CSUN and Redlands had to fight through snowfall throughout the morning match. The Bulldogs would open the scoring on a goal from Emma Parker near the two-minute mark of the first period but Alexis Smith would even it up on a power play. Tatiana Smeltzer then gave the Matadors a 2-1 lead in the final minute of the first quarter. Redlands continued to give the Matadors a battle with another goal from Parker that squared the game once more, however, Hovanesian scored on a power play and Telek closed up the half with a late goal for a CSUN 4-2 lead.
The Matadors took control of the contest in the third period, outscoring the Bulldogs 3-1 in the eight-minute session. Telek and Smith each racked up their second goals of the match while Telek also scored on a penalty shot to extend the lead to 7-3. In the fourth, Telek recorded another goal and Hovanesian added an insurance goal as the Matadors held the Bulldogs scoreless.
Lopez recorded eight saves in the match to go with two steals. Telek finished with six steals.
GAME 2 RECAP
Westcliff took a 1-0 lead at the 5:45 mark of the first period via a goal from Tatjana Teodorovic. However, from there it would be all Matadors. Hovanesian evened the contest just 56 seconds later then Telek struck the net to put CSUN on top. After Hovanesian scored late in the first period, she completed the hat trick in the opening minute of the second quarter. Telek added three more CSUN goals as the Matadors led 7-1 after 16 minutes.
Teodorovic scored two of the first three goals to begin the third period but five goals would be the closest the Warriors got the rest of the way. Telek scored two goals in the third while Carly Bockstahler hit the net as well. Anna Pal made a buzzer beater to end third period, giving the Matadors an 11-3 advantage.
In the final period, Helena Sandhagen would get into the scoring act on a power play while Smith closed the scoring for the Matadors.
Lopez recorded 19 saves in 32 more minutes in front of the cage. Telek, who finished with six goals in the match, dished out two assists and drew six exclusions. Pal had three assists while Hovanesian had two.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"In 20-plus years of coaching college water polo, that's the first time I've coached in the snow. Our team did a good job of minimizing the weather distraction and hats off to our athletic trainer for keeping the student-athletes as warm and prepped as possible to compete. Coming away with a win in the snow was a very memorable experience.
The challenge against Westcliff was not having a lot of game film on this opponent and coming into a game a little unsure of what to expect. Our big guns played like big guns in this game though and it really set the tone early. With a commanding 7-1 lead at the half, it was great to get contributions from the whole roster as the game moved into the second half. An off day now and we'll start prepping for the Harvard trip next weekend where the weather is expected to be warmer than today."
UP NEXT
CSUN will make a cross country trip to compete at the Harvard Invitational. The Matadors face La Salle at 9 a.m. and Siena at 2:20 p.m. on Saturday. The event closes on Sunday with CSUN set to take on Harvard at 6:20 a.m. and Carthage at 9 a.m. All times are pacific.
