SANTA CLARA, Calif.—CSUN won its third consecutive women's tennis dual on Saturday as the Matadors defeated Santa Clara 4-2.
With the threat of rain looming, the dual began with singles play. First, Victoria Santibañez Luna broke the seal for the Matadors with a victory at No. 4. She took the first set against Giulia Hayer 6-2 and was leading 5-2 before Hayer retired. Then, Yuliia Zhytelna defeated Finley Kalinic 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 to put CSUN up 2-0.
Angela Ho handed Varya Zlotnnik a 6-2, 6-2 defeat in No. 6 play before Sasha Turchak clinched the dual with a 6-2, 6-3 win versus Velizara Fileva at No. 2. The Broncos were victorious at No. 1 and No. 5. Two doubles matches got underway before the rain arrived, calling a halt to the action for the day.
PLAYER REACTION
"I played with confidence today," said Zhytelna. "My body language was positive, which helped me not lose pace."
"Today was a really fun match against Santa Clara," Ho said. "I was in control throughout most of my singles match and felt very confident in my shots. Doubles was exciting because my family and friends came to watch me play and there was a lot of support from the team and audience members."
