SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- CSUN women's tennis edged Cal State Fullerton, 4-3, in a thrilling quarterfinal back and forth victory on Wednesday at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Matadors won the doubles point and Angela Ho, Nicole West, and Sandra Isabela Argulles all won their singles matches. The match was tied at three apiece and West came back to win in three sets to clinch the victory.
Â
The Matadors opened the afternoon by securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Satsuki Ishikawa and Madison Shepperson rolled past Milena Gevorgyan and Madison Schwarz, 6-1 as CSUN got half of the job done on Court No. 3. The Titans, however, answered back. Dana Kunza and Martina Markov earned a 6-3 win over Arguelles and Emma Moratalla Sanz on Court No. 2. It came down to Court No.1. The tandem of Angela Ho and Nicole West finished a tightly contested point when they defeated Emilie Lugon-Moulin and Seha Yu, 7-5.
Â
Arguelles notched the first singles victory for the Matadors. She had a dominant performance at No. 6 singles, cruising past Kunza, 6-0, 6-2 to make it a 2-0 lead.
Â
Ho then extended the lead even further. She took care of Markov, 6-1, 6-4 on Court No. 1 to give the Matadors a commanding 3-0 lead.
Â
The Titans had other plans as they were not going to fall down easily. Cal State Fullerton claimed wins on courts two, four and five to tie things up at 3-3. Lugon-Moulin topped Moratalla Sanz, 6-1, 6-3, at Court No. 2. Yu earned a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Ishikawa on Court No. 4, and Gevorgyan defeated Tallia Harper, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5.
Â
Everyone in the stands had their eyes focused on Court No. 3. West took on Amelia Zylberman for a spot in the semifinals. It looked like West was going to move on after her first set win at 6-4 before Zylberman responded with a 7-5 win in the second set. West then took control, winning the third set, 6-3 to send CSUN on to the next round.Â
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"This team is gritty. They are fighters, and more than anything they are the closest group you could ever ask for. The support they have for each other is amazing to see. They are absolutely wonderful people and it's such a privilege to be their coach.
Â
On the match coming down to Nicole West's singles match:
"Nicole is used to this. She was in the southwest regionals, which is a high-level tournament. She was up against it and the player from Fullerton really made her work. Momentum was working against her, and she came out on top.
Â
On defeating Fullerton who beat CSUN earlier this season:
"Angela [Ho] was a big reason we reversed it. She is showing herself to be one of the best players in the Big West. I don't think anybody would dispute that. She's one of the greatest athletes in CSUN's history and one of the greatest people we have ever had."
Â
POST-MATCH COMMENTS FROM NICOLE WEST
"We came out with so much belief today and it carried us and me all the way through. Down 0-2 as well as 15-40 in the third set was tough. My teammates and their energy carried me through. So much fun and such a cool moment for me personally and as a team."
Â
POST-MATCH COMMENTS FROM SANDRA ISABELA ARGUELLESÂ
"This win reflects every practice, every effort, and every tough moment we've overcome together. The energy and fight this team has shown these days at the Big West Championship have been incredible. I'm so proud of us that we played as a true team and we're more than ready for what's next."
Â
POST-MATCH COMMENTS FROM ANGELA HOÂ
"Huge win for us today. Winning doubles off a close point really brought me belief into singles. I truly thought our team could win and trusted my game."
