3/10/2023 3:31:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo (15-6, 0-1 Big West) gave No. 11 UC Davis (11-8, 1-0 Big West) a battle for 32 minutes, but the Matadors would fall short in The Big West opener by an 11-7 score on Friday at Matador Pool. Shelby Hovanesian and Dorottya Telek had two goals apiece to lead the offense. Meghan Lopez finished with 10 saves in front of the cage.
With rain pouring down on Matador Pool, the Aggies jumped in front early, scoring twice over the first two minutes of play. Telek put the Matadors on the scoreboard at the 4:07 mark of the first period, but Alyssa Lengtat returned the favor with a goal for the Aggies. After coming up empty on a pair of power plays, Telek scored on a 6-on-5 advantage with 59 seconds on the clock. Kelly Hungerford though added another UC Davis tally to close quarter for a 4-2 lead.
CSUN would battle back early in the second quarter, evening the match on goals from Hovanesian and Tatiana Smeltzer. With the score deadlocked at 4-4, CSUN had an opportunity to take the lead on a penalty shot, but Telek's attempt was stopped at the net. The Aggies surged back in front with goals from Grace Pelkey and Lengtat before later taking a 7-5 lead into intermission.
Lengtat opened up the scoring in the third period before Helena Sandhagen again brought the Matadors back to within two. The deficit though swelled to four on goals from Pelkey and Noelle Wijnbelt as CSUN was held off the scoreboard the rest of the period. The Matadors would also miss their second penalty shot of the match in the third quarter.
As the rain continued to pick up steam in the fourth quarter, neither side would get much going on the offensive end over the final eight minutes. Hovanesian ended CSUN's scoring drought with a goal in the opening minute, but the Matadors would not get closer than 10-7. UC Davis withstood a pair of exclusions in the final period while the Aggies added to their lead late in the match on Pelkey's fourth goal of the day.
GAME NOTES
Hovaensian added three assists to go with her two goals. Telek pushed her season goal total to 83 while she drew five exclusions in the contest. On the defensive side, Nicole Bacoyanis had three steals.
UC Davis had 11 total exclusions while CSUN had one.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Hats off to a talented Davis team. We had our opportunities to win the game and just didn't finish. Much like last week, 7-for-35 shooting just isn't going to equate to winning against nationally-ranked opponents. It's frustrating to be so close and have our team on the losing side of a close battle. We have one day to get as healthy as possible and then we'll take on Hawai'i this Sunday.
