PALM DESERT, Calif. - Junior Eirik Thomassen vaulted into the top five but the CSUN men's golf team slipped from seventh to 11th following the second round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Thursday at The Classic Club.
Thomassen, who opened the day in a tie for 19th place, had three birdies over his opening four holes to move to 3-under. A pair of bogeys over his next four holes dropped him to 1-under before another birdie at No. 13 brought him back to 3-under where he would remain at the end of the round.
Facing roughly the same challenging conditions they faced on Wednesday, the Matadors dropped five strokes from round one to round two. After opening with a team round of 294, CSUN posted a 299 to slip into 11th at 17-over 593. Host Wyoming took over the team lead Thursday after firing a round of 279 which moved the Cowboys six shots clear of the lead ay 7-under 569.

COACH JIM BRACKEN SAID
"We had a ton of bad shots today that unfortunately turned into double bogeys, which is obviously not a recipe for success. Eirik played well but as a team we just didn't get it done. We know we're a better team than we've played the last two days and our focus tomorrow is to shoot under-par and move up the leaderboard."
The Matadors will be paired with UT-Arlington, Texas State and Sacramento State for the final round which is scheduled to get underway with a shotgun start Friday morning at 8 a.m.
