PALM DESERT, Calif. - Junior Eirik Thomassen posted his best finish of the season, tying for fourth place to pace the CSUN men's golf team to a top-10 finish Friday at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club.
Thomassen, who began the final round in a tie for third, closed with a round of 1-under 71 to tie for fourth at 3-under 213. Thomassen began the day on the No. 9 tee and made par on his opening five holes before an eagle at No. 14 dropped him to 2-under. Three bogeys and a pair of birdies over his next seven holes left him at 1-under when he would remain at the end of his round.
As a team, the Matadors posted their best team round of the tournament on Friday, carding a 292 to move up one spot into 10th place at 21-over 885. Host Wyoming led over the final two rounds and closed out the team title with a score of 7-under 857. Fresno State (860), Colorado (863), Utah (868) and Hawai'i (872) rounded out the top five in the 16-team field. CSUNÂ SCORES
COACH JIM BRACKEN SAID
"We've been playing in pretty tough conditions for the past month and a half and our scores have been up a little bit. That's no excuse, the bottom line is we've got to be more consistent. The positive is that we have plenty of time to work on that before the Big West Championship at end of April. We have a three-week break before our next event at Torrey Pines and the team knows the level of golf we need to be playing at, so hopefully we'll get some more favorable conditions in the next couple weeks and work on some things in practice."
The Matadors will return to the course on Mar. 27 as CSUN tees it up at the UCSD Invitational at Torrey Pines GC (Mar. 27-28).
