NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (29-17, 15-10 Big West) fell 7-0 to Hawai'i (26-18, 15-10 Big West) on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. Lucas Braun gave the Matadors a quality start by working 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out eight batters. Andrew Sojka collected two of the Matadors six hits in the contest. CSUN had runners on base in six of nine innings but would leave a total of 11 runners stranded on the day.
Braun would do his best to keep the Rainbow Warrior offense at bay over the course of the ball game. After a leadoff walk and an error in the first inning, Braun rebounded to keep the Bows off the scoreboard. Hawai'i though broke through with a single tally in the second inning after three-straight hits opened the frame. However, Braun limited the damage, retiring Jordan Donahue and Dallas Duarte to end the inning.Â
In the third, Braun struck out the first two batters of the inning but Hawai'i put together a two-out rally to stretch its lead. Once again, three-straight singles produced a run as Ben Zeigler-Namoa came through with an RBI single for a 2-0 Hawai'i lead. Braun would walk Jared Quandt to load the bases before retiring Aaron Ujimori for the final out of the frame.
After giving up two runs through three innings, Braun would keep Hawai'i off the scoreboard for the rest of his time on the mound. He surrendered a pair of hits in the fifth but picked up a strikeout-caught stealing double play to squash the rally. Braun also pitched around a one-out walk in the sixth before leaving the game with one out in the seventh.
Meanwhile, the Matadors' bats were stifled by Hawai'i pitching throughout the contest. Harry Gustin began the game by striking out the first four Matador batters. CSUN did get a pair of runners on base in the second inning when Ali Camarillo singled and Mason Le walked with two outs but Gustin retired Nathan Barraza on a flyout.
The Matadors would threaten again in the third after Gustin walked a pair of batters and gave up a single to Graysen Tarlow. However, the Matadors left the bases loaded when Camarillo lined out to right field.
CSUN again had two runners on base, this time in the fourth inning following a two-out double from Barraza and a walk to Camron Mercurio. Gustin though escaped the jam by retiring Kamau Neighbors. The fifth inning would see the Matadors put runners on first and second base with one out before Gustin sat down the next two batters.
The Bows held a 2-0 lead until the top of the eighth when they broke through with a big five-run inning against CSUN's bullpen. Hawai'i posted six hits in the inning, capped by a two-run triple from Stone Miyao.
Harrison Bodendorf worked the final three innings for Hawai'i, tossing one-hit ball with two strikeouts.
Â
GAME NOTES
Lucas Braun notched his seventh quality start of the season on Friday. His eight strikeouts on the day pushed his season total to 92 over 83.1 innings of work.
Ali Camarillo went 1-for-4 en route to extending his on-base streak to 16 games.
The Matadors were shutout for the first time at home since losing 10-0 to Saint Mary's on March 18, 2017.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We had too many immature at bats where we were playing and pressing to the results. We've done this before. This was another example of it, and due to our youth we struggled to learn that lesson today."
