From June 20 to July 24, GoMatadors.com will present its top 10 CSUN sports moments from the 2022-23 year. At No. 8, the CSUN beach volleyball team set several program records during the 2023 season as Mikaela Maughan took over as the all-time leader in individual wins and Abbey Sweeting and Gabriela Griego set the single-season record for wins as a pair.
During the 2023 beach volleyball season, the Matadors set a pair of program records while tying the all-time record for wins in a 17-16 season.
With 17 wins, CSUN matched the 2018 and 2022 Matador beach squads that also won 17 times. The Matadors now have 82 wins over the last six seasons.
Already the program record holder in pairs wins (43), senior Mikaela Maughan moved past Kailey Klein to become CSUN's all-time individual wins leader when she teamed up with Emily Sparks to defeat Boise State on Mar. 4. The win was the 53rd individual win for Maughan, who came into the 2023 season trailing Klein by three career wins (52-49).
She equaled Klein after picking up wins over Concordia (Feb. 23), Cal State LA (Mar. 3) and CSU Bakersfield (Mar. 4) before setting the record with a 2-0 win over Boise State on Mar. 5. With 17 individual wins this season, Maughan increased her career total to 66 which now leads the history of the 10-year program.
Sweeting and Griego, one of two CSUN pairs to earn All-Big West honors, Sweeting and Griego, finished the 2023 season with a program record 20 wins. CSUN's No. 5 pair primarily, the duo went 15-8 in the No. 5 slot and also finished with a 3-3 record at No. 4 and 2-1 in the No. 6 pair. With 20 wins as a pair, Sweeting and Griego broke the single season record of 18 wins held by three CSUN pairs (Kailey Klein-Victoria Rogers, Taylor Brydon-Lauren McMurray and Aeryn Owens-Katie Sato).
Individually, both Sweeting and Griego won 21 times which matches Rogers single-season record from 2022 when she also won 21 times.
