NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN's right-handed pitcher Lucas Braun was selected in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
A two-time All-Big West Second Team selection, Braun was one-of-eight Big West players taken in this year's draft and the second-highest drafted overall in the conference.
After beginning his career at the University of San Diego, Braun lettered two seasons with the Matadors and emerged as one of the top weekend starting pitchers in The Big West.
Braun served as a Friday starter this season where he became just the third Matador since 2006 to record 100 strikeouts in a season. Braun went 6-5 on the mound with a 4.83 ERA in 91.1 total innings. The hard-throwing right hander would finish third in The Big West in strikeouts and innings pitched and seventh in wins. In conference play, Braun notched five of his six wins and punched out 65 batters in 10 starts.
Last season, Braun went from middle relief pitcher to weekend starter in a standout 2022 campaign. Braun would post a 7-4 record with a 2.91 ERA and 77 strikeouts for that season.
In 35 total appearances at CSUN, Braun racked up a 13-9 record and a 3.97 ERA with opposing batters managing a .250 hitting average.
Braun is just the second Matador in team history to be drafted by the Atlanta Braves, joining Bob Christensen, who was taken by the Braves in the 1965 draft.
