
CSUN Top 10 – No. 4 Softball Earns First Postseason Berth Since 2015

From June 20 to July 24, GoMatadors.com will present its top 10 CSUN sports moments from the 2022-23 year. At No. 4, the CSUN Softball team earned its first postseason bid since 2015.
For the first time since 2015, the CSUN softball team played a postseason game as the Matadors participated in the 2023 National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC).
Maryland defeated the Matadors 8-0 in the opening game of the NISC on May 18. Courtney Wyche limited the Matadors to three hits in the shutout. San José State eliminated CSUN from the tournament 13-5 on May 19. Gizella Vargas Sandoval went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Matadors against the Spartans. Shaylan Whatman went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
CSUN ended the regular season on a nine-game winning streak as the Matadors finished the season 28-24. Lauryn Carranco's Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year honors led the way for the Matadors as six players earned All-Conference honors.
Three CSUN players, Mikayla Carman, Kaylee Escutia, and Allie Gardiner, were named to the 2023 Academic All-District® Softball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom.
13 CSUN softball players have earned Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors. Athletes who achieve a 3.5 or better GPA on a 4.0 scale are recognized as Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes, while 10 Matadors were named Academic All-Conference.
